CANBERRA, April 27 \u2013 One of Australia\u2019s most senior security\u00a0officials has said liberal democracies must brace for\u00a0war\u00a0while searching for peace amid elevated global tensions.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs Department Secretary Mike Pezzullo said the possibility of\u00a0war\u00a0was increasing.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, as free nations again hear the\u00a0beating\u00a0drums\u00a0and watch worryingly the militarisation of issues that we had, until recent years, thought unlikely to be catalysts for\u00a0war, let us continue to search unceasingly for the chance for peace while bracing again \u2026 for the curse of\u00a0war,\u201d Pezzullo said in a letter to staff on Anazac Day, which honors the country\u2019s\u00a0war\u00a0dead.<\/p>\n

Pezzullo did not specify the catalyst for his\u00a0warning but it follows a sharp deterioration in Australia\u2019s relationship with China and a rise in regional tensions over Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Australian\u00a0Defence Minister Peter Dutton said on Sunday that a conflict involving China over Taiwan \u201cshould not be discounted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s opposition Labor party criticized Pezzullo\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that is pretty hyper-excited language and I am not sure our senior public servants should be using that language,\u201d Labor party lawmaker Bill Shorten told Australia\u2019s Channel 9.<\/p>\n

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under Beijing\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said he hoped Australia was aware of the sensitive nature of the issue and could \u201cavoid sending any wrong signal to Taiwan independence forces.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
