The box office was in dire straits for a few months there thanks to the pandemic, but it looks like slowly and steadily, people are ready to go back to the movies<\/a>.\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em><\/strong> recently became the\u00a0top-grossing Hollywood movie of the pandemic, and now, another Warner Bros. release \u2013\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em><\/strong> \u2013\u00a0<\/em>has climbed its way to the top of the charts. But it\u2019s not alone. The\u00a0Japanese animated film\u00a0Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0made its domestic debut and gave\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> a run for its money. In the end, though,\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> claimed the number one spot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> isn\u2019t very good. In fact, I\u2019d say it\u2019s kind of bad. But that didn\u2019t matter to moviegoers, who seem hellbent on going back to theaters. The action flick arrived with 2021\u2019s second-highest domestic opening, following\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>. It took in\u00a0$22.5 million during its opening weekend, bringing its worldwide total (it\u2019s been out overseas for a few weeks already) to\u00a0$406 million.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Japanese animated film\u00a0Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train<\/em> came in second at\u00a0$19.5 million. It opened in Japan in October of last year, and this recent U.S. release brings the global total to $456 million. That\u2019s not too shabby, folks. In fact, it\u2019s pretty damn good. Good work,\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em>! Way to slay those demons!
\nOnce reigning champ\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> fell to third place, the Bob Odenkirk action pic\u00a0Nobody<\/em> <\/strong>comes in at number four,\u00a0Raya and the Last Dragon<\/em><\/strong> is in fifth place. In terms of newer releases, the indie dramedy\u00a0Together Together<\/em><\/strong> came in at a respectable eighth place.<\/p>\n

So what now? There are no big theatrical openings until next month, so this upcoming weekend will likely end with\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> still at the top. But come May, theaters will see the release of titles like\u00a0Wrath of Man<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Spiral: From the Book of Saw<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Those Who Wish Me Dead<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Cruella<\/em><\/strong>, and the delayed A Quiet Place Part II<\/em><\/strong>. I don\u2019t know how many of those titles will be big hits (Spiral<\/em> and\u00a0A Quiet Place<\/em> seem like the biggest no-brainers on that front), but the movies are back, I guess!<\/p>\n
