It\u2019s the fate of nearly every successful foreign-language film \u2014 to be remade in English by Hollywood. But the turnaround came remarkably fast for\u00a0Another Round<\/em><\/strong>, the stellar comedy-drama from director\u00a0Thomas Vinterberg<\/strong> that walked away with the Best International Film Oscar on Sunday night. And less than 24 hours later, Hollywood struck with the news<\/a> that a remake was in the works with Leonardo DiCaprio potentially taking the role played by Mads Mikkelsen. Naturally, the internet didn\u2019t respond well. But Vinterberg is holding out a little more hope for the\u00a0Another Round<\/em> remake than the rest of us.<\/p>\n

In an interview with IndieWire<\/a>, Vinterberg said that he is \u201cfull of hope and curiosity\u201d about the upcoming\u00a0Another Round\u00a0<\/em>remake from DiCaprio\u2019s App<\/a>ian Way, citing previous English-language adaptations of his own works for the stage:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen various interpretations of my work before. It\u2019s an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions. Now it\u2019s in the hands of the finest actor you can get and besides being a brilliant actor, he\u2019s made very intelligent choices throughout his career. I feel there\u2019s a lot of integrity in the choices he\u2019s made. I\u2019m full of hope and curiosity about what they\u2019re up to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Vinterberg\u2019s 1998 film\u00a0The Celebration<\/em> has been adapted into a stage play in multiple languages, while an English version of his 2012 drama\u00a0The Hunt<\/em>, also starring Mikkelsen, opened at\u00a0London\u2019s Almeida Theatre in 2019. But it\u2019s hard to imagine\u00a0Another Round<\/em> without its very specific portrayal of Danish drinking culture, and without Mikkelsen\u2019s tidal wave of a performance in the lead role as a washed-up teacher who finds a new lease on life through a doomed drinking experiment. But Vinterberg dismissed the likelihood that Mikkelsen would want to reprise the role in a remake, despite the Danish actor fairly big profile in the States for his roles in\u00a0Hannibal, Star Wars<\/em>, and more. Vinterberg said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll leave those kind of decisions to Appian Way and the dialogue I\u2019ll have with them. I don\u2019t know if Mads would do such a thing. My first thought would be to make a different interpretation. Asking the same actor to do a different interpretation could be a little bit confusing. But I won\u2019t be the main creative force in this. That would have to be up to the people who end up doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While Vinterberg enjoys\u00a0\u201cthe fact that there are more and more readers of subtitles in the United States,\u201d he told IndieWire that \u201cit\u2019s still very limited. I don\u2019t think this is only about trying to make this understandable to people who can\u2019t read subtitles. I see this as an artistic project where someone is using the text as a starting point and developing it into something else. It\u2019s a different culture; it\u2019s not only a different language.\u201d<\/p>\n
