A bottle of what\u2019s believed to be the oldest known whiskey in existence will hit the auction block this summer \u2014 where it\u2019s expected to sell for an intoxicating price.<\/p>\n

The Old Ingledew Whiskey \u2014 which dates back to Revolutionary times \u2014 is anticipated to fetch somewhere between $20,000-$40,000, according to to Skinner<\/a>,\u00a0which is facilitating the June auction.<\/p>\n

The rare bourbon was was likely produced between 1762-1802, based on Carbon 14 dating conducted in conjunction with experts from the University of Georgia.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t bottled until several decades later, in the 1860s, at the general<\/a> store Evans & Ragland in La Grange, Georgia.<\/p>\n

Wall Street financier John Pierpont Morgan \u2014 whose banking firm ultimately became J.P. Morgan and Co. \u2014 is believed to have purchased the bottle during one of his frequent trip<\/a>s to the Peach State.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fascinating story,\u201d Joseph Hyman, a fine spirits specialist at Skinner, told Barrons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whiskey was not bottled at a distillery destroyed in the war, it is actually bottled by a general store, which is the same way the Scotish whisky Johnnie Walker started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morgan\u2019s son, Jack Morgan, gifted the bottle to judge and politician James Byrnes and two sister bottles to Franklin D. Roosevelt \u2014 a distant cousin \u2014 and Harry S. Truman, for Christmas, circa 1942-44,\u00a0Hyman said.<\/p>\n

Byrnes, who served in Congress, on the US Supreme Court and as governor of South Carolina, reportedly re-gifted the spirit to his friend and drinking buddy Francis Drake in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Drake and his descendants \u2014 who were strict Scotch drinkers \u2014 saved the brew for three generations.<\/p>\n

It will be offered in an online auction from June 22-30.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
