The iPhone orientation lock lacks context awareness. Opening YouTube<\/a> or Netflix won\u2019t disable the lock, nor will opening a news<\/a>-reading app enable it. Thankfully, there\u2019s a Shortcuts automation to automatically toggle the orientation lock when using certain apps.<\/p>\n

As long as your iPhone is running iOS 14.5 or higher, you have access to a Shortcuts action called \u201cSet Orientation Lock.\u201d Using this action, you can create a shortcut automation that will enable or disable the portrait orientation lock.<\/p>\n

The Automation feature in Shortcuts supports many triggers, ranging from the time of day to opening or closing apps. In this guide, we\u2019ll focus on the opening and closing app trigger.<\/p>\n

When using the Orientation Lock action in a shortcut, you can create multiple automations depending on your needs. For example, you can disable the orientation lock when opening Netflix or YouTube. Then, you can create another one for reenabling it when closing the Netflix or YouTube app.<\/p>\n

In the following guide, we\u2019ll walk you through the process of setting up an automation that disables orientation lock when you open an app (Netflix or YouTube).<\/p>\n

To get started, first, open the \u201cShortcuts\u201d app on your iPhone and navigate to the \u201cAutomations\u201d tab.<\/p>\n

Tap the \u201c+\u201d button from the top.<\/p>\n

Choose the \u201cCreate Personal Automation\u201d option.<\/p>\n

Make sure that the \u201cIs Opened\u201d option is selected. This makes sure that the automation runs when you open the selected apps. Then, tap the \u201cNext\u201d button from the top.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s time to create the shortcut. Here, tap the \u201cAdd Action\u201d button.<\/p>\n

By default, this action is set to toggle the orientation lock. But we want to disable it, so tap the \u201cToggle\u201d button for more options.<\/p>\n

Next, tap the \u201cOn\u201d button so that it switches to the \u201cOff\u201d settings. The shortcut is now complete. Tap the \u201cNext\u201d button.<\/p>\n

By default, the shortcut automation will send you a notification that you\u2019ll have to tap to trigger the automation. Toggle off the \u201cAsk Before Running\u201d option to disable this feature.<\/p>\n

From the pop-up, tap the \u201cDon\u2019t Ask\u201d button to confirm.<\/p>\n

Now, this automation will run automatically in the background. Once you\u2019re done, tap the \u201cDone\u201d button.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s it. The automation is now complete.<\/p>\n

The next time you open the Netflix or YouTube app, you\u2019ll see a notification saying that the app has triggered the shortcut.<\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019ve created the automation for disabling the portrait orientation lock when opening an app, you can create another automation to reenable it when you close the apps. You can repeat the instructions above with a few modifications.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re setting up the shortcut, make sure to select the \u201cIs Closed\u201d option.<\/p>\n
