Antisemites adopted a new tactic for spewing their hate when the COVID-19 pandemic closed synagogues and Jewish schools and community centers: hijacking video conferences.<\/p>\n

The Anti-Defamation League counted 196 cases of antisemitic\u00a0\u201cZoom bombing\u201d\u00a0<\/a>attacks in the US last year, including 114 against Jewish institutions,\u00a0according to an annual report<\/a>\u00a0that the organization is releasing Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The Jewish civil rights group found that the overall number of antisemitic incidents dropped by 4 percent last year after reaching\u00a0a record high in 2019<\/a>. The decrease in incidents \u2014 from 2,107 in 2019 to 2,024 last year \u2014 included a 49 percent decline in assaults, an 18 percent drop in vandalism cases and a 61 percent reduction in incidents at non-Jewish K-12 schools.<\/p>\n

But the total remained historically high in 2020, with the third-highest tally since the ADL began tracking antisemitic incidents in 1979. Intruders disrupting video conferences on Zoom and other platforms offset a dramatic drop in antisemitic incidents in more traditional settings, according to the ADL, which provided The Associated Press with a copy of the report ahead of its release.<\/p>\n

Many synagogues used video conferences to hold prayer services, classes and other virtual programming as pandemic lockdown orders ruled out large indoors gatherings.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut these platforms quickly revealed security vulnerabilities and many individuals took it upon themselves to access these events and perpetuate hate and antisemitism by harassing participants,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n

On the morning of June 27, 2020, Rabbi Shai Cherry was leading a Shabbat service on Zoom for his congregation in a Philadelphia suburb when several guests with suspicious usernames began posting pornographic images and antisemitic messages like \u201cHitler should have finished the job.\u201d One of them posted Cherry\u2019s home address near the synagogue for Congregation Adath Jeshurun in Elkins, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt didn\u2019t take us more than 90 seconds to just end the meeting and then be more selective about who we let in,\u201d he recalled. \u201cBut it was unsettling. It did feel like we were violated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Authorities didn\u2019t identify any suspects and it hasn\u2019t happ<\/a>ened again. The congregation\u2019s online services are now protected by a password.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Greenblatt, the ADL\u2019s CEO and national director, said white supremacists and other far-right extremists tend to be among the earliest to embrace and employ new technologies to spread hate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntisemitism is a virus. It adapts, it mutates and it resists efforts to fight it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe extremists who traffic in it, they are innovative and they will exploit opportunities because they often can\u2019t penetrate the public conversation in typical ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoom says it recently updated default settings and added features to make it easier for meeting hosts to control screen sharing, remove and report abusive participants and lock meetings. The company recommends keeping private meeting links and passwords off social media<\/a> or other public forums.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take meeting disruptions extremely seriously and where appropriate, we work closely with law enforcement authorities,\u201d company lawyer Lynn Haaland said in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n

In March 2020,\u00a0the FBI said<\/a>\u00a0it was receiving reports of online hijackers disrupting video conferences with pornographic and hateful images and threatening messages. Greenblatt said the ADL flagged the security problem for Zoom early in the pandemic. The company responded quickly and thoroughly to protect users, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a lot different than what we\u2019ve seen from some of the long-standing social media companies,\u201d Greenblatt said.<\/p>\n

Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta, Georgia, was the target of a Zoom bombing attack last April, but executive director Marty Gilbert said synagogue leaders decided against locking down its online services with a password.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had enough issues with people figuring out Zoom to begin with. And we also wanted people to be able to join regardless of whether they were members or not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In February, several intruders disrupted a service with antisemitic messages. Police determined that a group of teenagers from Nevada and Europe were responsible but couldn\u2019t identify them by name or bring any charges, according to Gilbert.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that it has become the world we live in,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish we didn\u2019t have to have somebody manage every Zoom meeting or service that we have. It\u2019s very upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York City-based ADL attributes several Zoom bombing incidents to\u00a0Andrew Auernheimer<\/a>, a notorious hacker known as \u201cweev.\u201d Auernheimer has written for\u00a0The Daily Stormer<\/a>, a neo-Nazi website and he stirred up outrage for sending flyers adorned with swastikas to internet-connected fax machines on college campuses across the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn these incidents, participants reported Auernheimer joined the Zoom calls and pulled his shirt collar down to reveal a swastika tattoo on his chest,\u201d the ADL report says.<\/p>\n

The release of the ADL\u2019s report coincides with the second anniversary of a gunman\u2019s deadly attack on a California synagogue.<\/p>\n

A former nursing student,\u00a0John T. Earnest<\/a>, remains jailed on charges he killed a woman and wounded three other people at Chabad of Poway synagogue near San Diego in April 2019. Earnest told a 911 dispatcher that he shot up the synagogue on the last day of Passover to save white people from Jews, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n

No such mass attacks occurred in the US last year.<\/p>\n

The ADL says it saw \u201csituations at both the regional and local levels\u201d in which Jews were blamed for the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis led to expressions of hostility and antisemitism on social media and, in some cases, real-world harassment of Jews, but we have not identified cases where we can directly link specific instances of violent antisemitism to conspiracy theories or scapegoating surrounding the COVID-19 virus,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n

The ADL says it compiles its annual audit of antisemitic incidents using information provided by victims, law enforcement and community leaders.<\/p>\n

The ADL\u2019s report says its count also includes reports of anti-Zionist and anti-Israel harassment, vandalism or assaults characterized by anti-Jewish animus. But the group says it doesn\u2019t conflate general<\/a> criticism of Israel or anti-Israel activism with antisemitism.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
