The LAPD cop who sought to meet LeBron James to discuss \u201cthe reality\u201d of policing said the NBA superstar has not replied to his open letter \u2013 and revealed he almost had to use deadly force four times during his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was LeBron James before I became a police officer,\u201d Deon Joseph, who addressed James player after his inflammatory tweet about the Ohio officer who fatally shot 16-year-old Ma\u2019Khia Bryant, told Fox News<\/a> on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not want to be a police officer at all. Being young and African American growing up in the late 80s and 90s, which were very violent and turbulent times, I thought that the police were basically our natural enemy,\u201d the 24-year veteran told host Sean Hannity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost like a rite of passage \u2014 if you\u2019re African American, you have to hate the police,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On April 21, the Los Angeles Lakers player sparked controversy\u00a0when he tweeted a picture\u00a0of Columbus Police Officer Nicholas Reardon along with the ominous-sounding caption, \u201cYOU\u2019RE NEXT.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later\u00a0deleted the tweet\u00a0amid a backlash, saying he took the missive down because it was \u201cbeing used to create more hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Sunday post on Facebook<\/a>, Joseph assailed James for allegedly \u201cputting a target\u201d on Reardon\u2019s back \u2013 but said he hoped to meet the famed hoopsters so the two can sit down and talk about the reality of police work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I do or don\u2019t, I\u2019m not going to lose any love for him,\u201d the officer said on Fox News<\/a>. \u201cI think the work he does for children and charities is incredible. It\u2019d be disapp<\/a>ointing but if it inspires other people and their committee members start talking again, then that\u2019s good with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph continued: \u201cIf he doesn\u2019t feel like [apologizing]. He doesn\u2019t have to. I just thought it would be good if you know you\u2019re wrong on an issue that you could at least say, \u2018Hey I got this one wrong. Yes I want accountability, but this one I got wrong.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he wrote the letter because the officer who shot Ma\u2019Khia \u201ccould have been me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking of four times in my career I almost had to use deadly force on somebody, and I didn\u2019t sleep for two days,\u201d he told Hannity. \u201cI was this close to shooting a young man to save other people while I\u2019m going home off duty, and that would have been said about me without him knowing who I am.<\/p>\n

Joseph added: \u201cI wake up praying that I\u2019ve never ever had to take the life of another human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he decided to join the LAPD when his family business shut down during the Rodney King riots.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was struggling that inner struggle with my blackness. \u2018Was I betraying my people?\u2019 And of course the answer was, \u2018no,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cOnce I joined the academy, all the stereotypes that I was fed about police kind of disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph stressed the importance of remembering that the vast majority of cops are decent people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re human beings dealing with human beings and that\u2019s not always going to be perfect or pretty,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
