“#NYC parents outraged over decision for \u2018blended\u2019 learning in schools<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Parents and students expressed outrage Wednesday over the city\u2019s plan for \u201cblended\u201d instruction, saying remote learning already has proven a failure \u2014 and limiting kids\u2019 time in school won\u2019t keep them safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever the plan, it\u2019s not going to meet everyone\u2019s needs,\u201d said Hana Jaber, 34, a stay-at-home mother of four from Park Slope, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t win! I\u2019m a qualified teacher, but my son does not want me teaching him. And remote learning is not effective. They are sitting in front of a screen in la-la land!\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cMy son, the 6-year-old, he tells me, \u2018You\u2019re not my teacher, I\u2019m not in school, I\u2019m not doing this!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Park Slope mom, Dina, 31, said of her three kids, \u201cI don\u2019t see how it\u2019s going to be safe for them. How does only going for two or three days make a difference?<\/p>\n

\u201cRemote learning doesn\u2019t work, and my kids don\u2019t want me as their teacher. I have a third-grader going into fourth grade, and I don\u2019t think he learned anything at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooklyn grandfather Bobby Roman, 65, said that \u201cthe main issue is the younger kids have to go back to school so the parents can go back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see how this is helping most people. We\u2019re lucky. We can help my daughter. We\u2019re retired, but a lot of people don\u2019t have a built-in babysitter!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are the rest of the parents gonna do when they have to go back to the office?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeannie Risolo, who lives on the Upper West Side and runs a test-prep and tutoring company, said there\u2019s no way she and husband, Ray Angelo, will be sending their twin daughters, 7, back to school .<\/p>\n

\u201cOver time, they will learn, and I can fill the learning gap, even if it takes more time,\u201d Risolo said while on a day trip<\/a> to Southampton with her family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fear for our family and extended family if our children go back to school .\u2009.\u2009. My mother visits all of the time, and I can\u2019t have her compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upper East Side resident Erin Aska, a furloughed television-industry worker, also said her 3-year-old daughter, Arcadia, won\u2019t be attending preschool at PS 196, as planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can\u2019t open up the theater, how are they going to open up the schools?\u201d she said. \u201cI want them to be open if it is going to be safe for the kids, but I don\u2019t think right now that\u2019s going to happ<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bensonhurst resident Stan Skylar, 17, an incoming senior at Manhattan\u2019s City-As-School HS, said he can\u2019t \u201csee the purpose of opening the schools now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still have to travel on a train, so I don\u2019t know. They get pretty packed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially underground \u2014 it starts spreading on the trains, and it\u2019s gonna get worse, not better.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Willa, a 14-year-old Park Slope resident who\u2019s planning to enter high school, said, \u201cI would rather just go back full-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheepshead Bay resident Crystal Estrada, 30, a supermarket cashier, said she has a 10-year-old child entering fifth grade and a 6-year-old entering first.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo! It makes no sense!\u201d she said of the city\u2019s plan. \u201cI don\u2019t think they should go back at all, not until it\u2019s safe! The risk, it\u2019s not worth it. All this going on, and they are going to bring it home. No! Not my kids, not until it\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn Martinez, a hairstylist from The Bronx, said her child struggled with online learning the past three months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like kids to go full-time, but if it\u2019s not possible, then they need to help the parents that have to go to work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Lauren Anchor, a single mom of two from College Point, Queens, said she was initially able to work from home for her employer, a construction company that \u201chas been considered essential during the entire pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut with everything opening back up, I am back at my office,\u201d she said. \u201cThe thought of my kids possibly not going into the classrooms full-time will deeply impact my life. The days my kids might be learning from home, I will have no one there to watch or help them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marble and tile installer Luan Demaj, 44, who was at Astoria Park in Queens with his wife and two sons Wednesday, said he has been collecting unemployment since the lockdown began and is worried he won\u2019t be able to return to work in the fall due to the school situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife does not speak English, so I have to help my children with online work,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it was up to me, the children would go back to school five days a week. For me, that is better. If police and doctors can go back to work and be safe, why can\u2019t teachers?\u201d<\/p>\n

Social<\/a> worker Beth Manitsky of Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, who has two high school-age girls, called the city\u2019s plan \u201cnot realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s unsafe. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She favors all-virtual learning because \u201cif and when we get hit again .\u2009.\u2009. I\u2019d rather they have it together for staying home once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n
