Universal and Blumhouse have set the release date for Scott Derrickson<\/strong>\u2018s return to horror,\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em><\/strong>. The film, which reunites Derrickson with his\u00a0Sinister\u00a0<\/em>star\u00a0Ethan Hawke<\/strong>, will land in theaters in winter 2022.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse productions have set the Black Phone<\/em> release date for\u00a0January 28, 2022<\/strong>.\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em> marks Derrickson\u2019s highly anticipated return to horror after directing Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Doctor Strange<\/em>, and is\u00a0based on a short story by Joe Hill in which a boy is kidnapp<\/a>ed and locked away in a basement with a disconnected phone that suddenly starts to ring.
\nUniversal had already placed the date on hold for a Blumhouse title, and\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em> easily slid into the slot. As of now,\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em> is the only wide release on that date, following the week after Sony and Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Morbius<\/em> is due in theaters on January 21. Per Deadline, no wide releases have yet been scheduled for the following weekend.<\/p>\n

The Black Phone<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of a Finney Shaw, \u201ca shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer\u2019s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn\u2019t happen to Finney.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan Hawke reportedly takes on the role of the kidnapper, in\u00a0a cast that includes\u00a0Mason Thames<\/strong>\u00a0(For All Mankind<\/em>),\u00a0Madeleine McGraw<\/strong>\u00a0(Toy Story 4<\/em>,\u00a0Secrets of Sulphur Springs<\/em>), and Jeremy Davies<\/strong> (Lost<\/em>).\u00a0Derrickson wrote the script with frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill, based on the short story by Joe Hill\u00a0from his\u00a0New York Times\u00a0bestseller\u00a020th\u00a0Century Ghosts<\/em>. Derrickson and Cargill\u2019s Crooked Highway produces the film. Jason Blum also produces, with\u00a0Hill, Christopher H. Warner, and Ryan Turek executive producing.<\/p>\n

A January release doesn\u2019t bode well for certain films, but it could suit a small-scale horror movie like\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em>. There\u2019s a chance Universal is banking on\u00a0The Black Phone<\/em> being a sleeper hit, taking advantage of a traditionally slow season.\u00a0This is, after all a reunion between Hawke and Derrickson \u2014 with Hawke playing against type as a villain, at that \u2014 and the filmmaker\u2019s return to horror after directing such genre hits as\u00a0Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Deliver Us From Evil.<\/em><\/p>\n
