Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s literary classic\u00a0The Great Gatsby<\/strong><\/em> entered the public domain at the start of this year, and it didn\u2019t take long before news<\/a> came out about multiple planned adaptations, including a TV series<\/a> and an animated movie. But the adaptations don\u2019t stop there: a The Great Gatsby<\/em> musical is also in the works, and today, word came out that Florence Welch<\/strong>, the rock star singer of Florence + The Machine, is writing the lyrics and co-writing the music for the new stage show.<\/span><\/p>\n

The official title of this production app<\/a>ears to be The Great Gatsby, A New Musical<\/strong><\/em> (yes, with a comma instead of a colon), and a \u201ctimeline for a pre-Broadway engagement\u201d is expected to be announced soon. Grammy nominated artist Florence Welch is writing the lyrics for the show and cooking up the music with fellow Grammy nominee Thomas Bartlett, a producer who you may know by his alias, \u201cDoveman.\u201d Welch is known for songs like \u201cDog Days Are Over,\u201d \u201cSpectrum (Say My Name),\u201d and \u201cShip to Wreck,\u201d among many others, while Bartlett has collaborated with Yoko Ono, Norah Jones, and Rufus Wainwright, just to name a few. \/Film readers may recall his work on the Call Me By Your Name<\/em> soundtrack with Sufjan Stevens, which Bartlett produced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis book has haunted me for a large part of my life,\u201d Welch said in a statement. \u201cIt contains some of my favourite lines in literature. Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald\u2019s\u00a0broken romanticism.\u00a0It is an honour to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in song.\u201d Welch has a lush, romantic, and haunting musical style which seems like a great fit for this material. In previous interviews, she\u2019s pinpointed \u201csex, death, love, violence\u201d as themes that she loves to explore, and all of those are on full display in Gatsby<\/em>, so this seems like a dream project for her.
\nRebecca Frecknall<\/strong> is directing the production, Amanda Ghost<\/strong> and Robert Fox<\/strong> are producing,\u00a0Hannah Giannoulis<\/strong> and James Orange<\/strong> are executive producing, and Pulitzer Prize winning writer Martyna Majok<\/strong> is writing the book.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thrilled, honored, and inspired to work with this company of extraordinary artists, and to get to live in F. Scott Fitzgerald\u2019s transcendent, gorgeous words,\u201d Majok said. \u201cI\u2019m also overjoyed to be reunited with Rebecca Frecknall, with whom I had the most wonderful experience working on my play,\u00a0Sanctuary City<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The original cast recording of The Great Gatsby, A New Musical<\/em> will be released on Warner Music.<\/p>\n
