That\u2019s ruff.<\/p>\n

The NYPD will return \u201cDigidog\u201d \u2014 the robotic police dog that sent tongues wagging and local politicians howling, The Post confirmed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The department said it had ended a contract with Boston Dynamics to lease the four-legged robo-cop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe contract has been terminated and the dog will be returned,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

It came after a\u00a0video\u00a0of the programmable pooch patrolling a Manhattan housing project\u00a0went viral, sparking backlash and drawing comparisons to the dystopic TV series<\/a> \u201cBlack Mirror.\u201d <\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio\u00a0then urged the NYPD to \u201crethink\u201d its use of the machine \u2014 and City Council leaders subpoenaed the department to find out its cost.<\/p>\n

Police officials\u00a0told The New York Times<\/a> that the department had ended its $94,000 contract with the robot dog\u2019s maker on April 22 in response to the inquiries from Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Councilman Ben Kallos.<\/p>\n

The lease on the dog, which had been scheduled to end in August, was cut short after the pup became a \u201ctarget,\u201d said John Miller, the NYPD\u2019s deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism. <\/p>\n

He said people were improperly\u00a0using the dog to fuel arguments about race and surveillance, according to the Times.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople had figured out the catchphrases and the language to somehow make this evil,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n

Police had previously\u00a0used the dog\u00a0in February while responding to a\u00a0home invasion and hostage situation\u00a0in the Bronx \u2014 earning jeers from local politicians including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who called it a \u201crobotic surveillance ground drone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bot weighs 70 pounds, has cameras and lights, is capable of two-way communication and is able to use artificial intelligence to navigate its environment. <\/p>\n

Kallos, who has\u00a0proposed legislation\u00a0to ban NYPD from using any weaponized robots or drones, told the Times that the dog underscored what he called the \u201cmilitarization of the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time where we should be having more beat cops on the street, building relationships with residents, they\u2019re actually headed in another direction in trying to replace them with robots,\u201d the Manhattan rep said.<\/p>\n

Bill Neidhardt, a spokesman for the mayor, said he was \u201cglad the Digidog was put down.\u201d<\/p>\n
