President Biden\u2019s speech Wednesday night failed on all counts: It didn\u2019t sell his latest spending plan, it didn\u2019t sell his larger agenda \u2014 and, worst of all, it didn\u2019t sell him.<\/p>\n

Start with the utterly bizarre \u201cmask theater.\u201d All the politicians in the room have been fully vaccinated, and Biden\u2019s own CDC says that\u2019s enough. So why the universal masking, and the social<\/a> distancing? The message, cutting across the president\u2019s occasional optimism, was that this nightmare will never end \u2014 which simply isn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n

Equally, obviously false was Biden\u2019s now-routine effort to claim all the credit for successful vaccinations: All that was set in motion before he took office.<\/p>\n

Then he moved into a series<\/a> of disjointed claims about his \u201cAmerican Families Plan\u201d that barely tracked, even though he was reading a prepared text.<\/p>\n

It seemed like he was just skipping whole paragraphs and even pages. You could see even Democrats wincing above their masks.<\/p>\n

He tossed in a few blatant whoppers, like his repeated claims that economists \u201cleft, right and center\u201d agree his program will work just as he says.<\/p>\n

Oh, and a classic Biden non-sequitur, attacking those who oppose his plans his intent to hike taxes on the rich: \u201cAsk them, whose taxes are you going to raise?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one\u2019s\u201d is the answer \u2014 because the opposition isn\u2019t looking to spend trillions more than the feds already do.<\/p>\n

Yet he never gave any clear unifying theme<\/a> for the \u201cfamilies\u201d plan, because it doesn\u2019t have one. It\u2019s just another grab-bag of items off Democrats\u2019 wish list.<\/p>\n

Then, bizarrely, he wandered into something like a State of the Union speech, ticking off mostly vacuous sales pitches for a host of bills he\u2019d like Congress to pass.<\/p>\n

Mixed in were lies about how he\u2019d solved the border crisis as vice president, plus vague waves at a foreign policy (and trade: He talks \u201cbuy American\u201d as much as the guy he replaced) and some noise about being tough militarily when the Defense Department is about the only federal agency he doesn\u2019t want to spend more on.<\/p>\n

The speech was packed with hoary clich\u00e9s and empty rhetoric about unity, spiced with blather about \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d and \u201csystemic racism\u201d even as he was insisting (correctly) that nearly all cops only work hard to protect the public. <\/p>\n

After all that, his effort to close with the traditional message of hope fell pretty flat, because he was out to show confidence in America after failing to give America reason to have much confidence in him.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
