Julia Goldani Telles, best-known as rebellious teen Whitney Solloway on \u201cThe Affair,\u201d stars in Season 3 of Steven Soderbergh\u2019s Starz anthology series<\/a> \u201cThe Girlfriend Experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Premiering Sunday (May 2) at 8 p.m., the new season follows Iris (Telles), an American student in London who\u2019s working as a neuroscience<\/a> researcher at a tech startup by day. By night, she works at a mysterious futuristic escort agency. Soon, she begins using her night job to help inform her day job, becoming fixated on using data to analyze desire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first saw [\u2018The Girlfriend Experience\u2019] I was maybe 21 or 22 and I was playing the daughter on \u2018The Affair,\u2019\u201d Telles, 26, told The Post. \u201cI was playing a young character, and I still felt very young in many aspects of my life. I couldn\u2019t imagine that anyone would hire me for this role. But I\u2019m really glad they did.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really intelligent woman who\u2019s a scientist,\u201d said Telles. \u201cShe has various worlds in which she\u2019s interacting, and she\u2019s presenting different versions of herself in all of them. I love how forward-facing the show is [and] I love the intersection between technology<\/a> and desire. Something that I thought was helpful for the character is there\u2019s a masterclass with this guy Chris Voss who\u2019s a former FBI hostage negotiator, and he talks about how you negotiate with somebody in a terrible citation and reflect back to them what they want while secretly having your own agenda. <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought that\u2019s one of Iris\u2019 main character traits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on Soderbergh\u2019s 2009 film of the same name, each season of \u201cThe Girlfriend Experience\u201d features a different star (including Riley Keogh<\/a> and Carmen Ejogo) and a different plotline involving the world of high-end escorts. The focus on intimacy makes it similar, in context, to \u201cThe Affair,\u201d which ended its run on Showtime in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that intimacy and sex is a crucial part of being human and we all have a lot of interest in it, so it\u2019s not surprising that there\u2019s a lot of shows featuring sex on television,\u201d Telles said. \u201cWhat differentiates \u2018Girlfriend Experience\u2019 from \u2018The Affair\u2019 is that \u2018The Affair\u2019 was sort of family drama, \u2018Rashomon\u2019-style, and \u2018The Girlfriend Experience\u2019 has more sci-fi overtones this season. It\u2019s more about, \u2018What is it like when a scientist puts themselves at the center of their own experiment? Is that ethical, what are the repercussions of that and can [Iris] really quantify human desire?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Telles said that Soderbergh was around for guidance, but the season was primarily in the hands of showrunner Anja Marquardt, a Berlin-born filmmaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what\u2019s so cool about this franchise is that Steven has created this amazing opportunity for independent filmmakers\u00a0 to come in and direct, write, produce an entire season of television,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is Anja\u2019s number-one fan and he really let her fly with it. But he was always available if I needed to text him and ask a question or talk through encouragement. So it was a great balance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like her character, Telles is herself a student at the moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m studying sociology and I\u2019ve been at Columbia since I was 19 \u2014 and I\u2019m now 26,\u201d she said. I\u2019m taking a long time because I keep doing a semester here and a semester there between projects. <\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe by the time I\u2019m 100 years old I\u2019ll graduate.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
