An NYPD cop fatally shot himself in his Manhattan apartment on Wednesday, sources said.<\/p>\n

The officer, 34, was discovered by police inside his Stuyvesant Town apartment at about 7:15 p.m. after he failed to show up for work, according to sources. His name has not been released.<\/p>\n

He was found lying face down on his bed with a bullet wound to his head, sources said. There was a gun beside him and a shell casing nearby, according to sources.<\/p>\n

The cop joined the department in 2013. He was stationed out of Times Square and would normally start his shift at 6 p.m., sources said.<\/p>\n

Residents at the officer\u2019s apartment complex said a swarm of cops converged on the area Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

A text message was also sent from building management to residents, informing them that somebody had taken their own life, according to multiple people who received the alert.<\/p>\n

The cop\u2019s suicide is believed to be the second in the NYPD this year \u2014 with the other occurring earlier this month.<\/p>\n

On April 5, Deputy Inspector Denis Mullaney shot himself in the head inside a department vehicle in Queens.<\/p>\n

Mullaney had earlier made a call to family members that led them to believe he was suicidal, sources said.<\/p>\n

Cops tried to locate Mullaney\u2019s phone, but he had already pulled the trigger by the time they got to the vehicle on Underhill Avenue near the Brooklyn-Queens Greenway, the sources said.<\/p>\n

The priest at Mullaney\u2019s funeral, Father Joseph Fonti, implored the NYPD to do more to \u201cbreak the silence\u201d about suicides within their ranks.<\/p>\n

In 2019, ten cops took their own lives, which was double the rate of past years.<\/p>\n

The crisis led the department to create a new confidential suicide-prevention program called \u201cFinest Care\u201d that offers free treatment from NewYork-Presbyterian psychiatrists and psychologists.<\/p>\n

Under the program, cops can seek help anonymously at the hospital system.<\/p>\n

A similar system has existed for the LAPD for decades, and Chicago and Houston have programs like it as well.<\/p>\n
