“#Microsoft teases Word\u2019s next default font \u2014 so we got a designer to weigh in<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Big, terrifying changes are afoot: there\u2019s going to be a new default font in Microsoft Word. Please, don\u2019t panic. You can riot, sure, but\u00a0no panicking.<\/em><\/p>\n

This decision was announced on Microsoft\u2019s blog<\/a>. In the piece, the company explains that it has commissioned five different fonts that could potentially replace the current default, Calibri.<\/p>\n

The piece itself provides a balanced view of all these different options, going into an admirable amount of depth about why they may be suitable to become Microsoft Word\u2019s next default font.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately though, we didn\u2019t see this news<\/a> on the blog. Instead, we saw it on that bastion of rational discussion, Twitter<\/a>. Have a look:<\/p>\n

Is a social<\/a> network famous for being one of the most toxic environments on the internet the best place to engage in dialogue about a default font? Yes. Definitely. Why bother even asking that?<\/p>\n

Anyway, we decided to ask\u00a0TNW\u2019s VP of Design,\u00a0Alexander Griffioen, to wade in with his opinions.<\/p>\n

But in order to keep the spirit of Microsoft\u2019s social media post alive, we only showed him the image below and asked him to provide only\u00a0Tweet-length comments. We\u2019re nothing but precise and fair.<\/p>\n

First things first,\u00a0Griffioen said the \u201csamples are too short to say anything sensible about.\u201d Which is a great start to this article.<\/p>\n

On the evidence he did<\/em> have, Griffioen immediately vetoed the\u00a0Grandview and Tenorite fonts as being \u201ctoo outspoken for body text.\u201d On top of that, he said that\u00a0Bierstadt looked like\u00a0Helvetica\u2019s ugly cousin.<\/p>\n

More positively,\u00a0Griffioen thought Skeena\u00a0could<\/em> work, but \u201cits stroke contrast makes it look dated.\u201d Ugh, totally agree.<\/p>\n

But\u2026 if he had to put his money anywhere,\u00a0Griffioen would choose Seaford. We have a winner for Microsoft Word\u2019s next default!\u00a0Well, sort of. He said he actually prefers Calibri over Seaford. That must hurt, Microsoft.<\/p>\n

What have we learned? All complex and nuanced discussions should now take place solely over Twitter and similar networks.<\/p>\n
