\n Geoffrey Berman, the ousted US attorney for the Southern District of New York who was leading probes into President Trump\u2019s allies, is scheduled to app<\/a>ear in a closed-door meeting Thursday before the House Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n

Last month, Berman was engaged in an extraordinary standoff with Attorney General<\/a> William Barr, who sought to have him leave office \u2014 and agreed to step down only after being assured his office\u2019s investigations of the president\u2019s inner circle would continue.<\/p>\n

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) called Berman\u2019s ouster \u201cpart of a clear and dangerous pattern\u201d of behavior by Barr.<\/p>\n

The panel\u2019s Democratic majority is pursuing a probe of the AG, who they claim operates more like the president\u2019s personal attorney than the nation\u2019s top law enforcement official.<\/p>\n

Barr also is expected to testify before the committee later this month.<\/p>\n

At the SDNY, Berman oversaw several ongoing probes of the president\u2019s associates, including some who featured prominently in Trump\u2019s House impeachment inquiry.<\/p>\n

The office is also looking into the business dealings of Trump\u2019s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani. It also has prosecuted the president\u2019s former fixer Michael Cohen, who was imprisoned for lying to Congress and campaign finance crimes.<\/p>\n

Berman \u2014 a Republican lawyer and Trump donor \u2014 had worked from 1987 to 1990 for the independent counsel who investigated the Reagan administration in the Iran-Contra affair.<\/p>\n

He was tapped by the White House in 2018 as the US attorney for SDNY.<\/p>\n

The effort to boot Berman sparked an unusual clash between the Justice Department and the SDNY.<\/p>\n

Barr announced late on a Friday that Berman was stepping down \u2014 but the US attorney later issued his own statement saying he had \u201cno intention of resigning\u201d and showed up for work the next morning.<\/p>\n

Barr then announced Berman\u2019s firing and Trump told reporters it was \u201call up to the attorney general.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t involved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier on that Friday, Barr met with Berman in New York and offered him a new job leading the Justice Department\u2019s civil division in Washington \u2014 one of the department\u2019s top roles \u2014 and floated the possibility of him replacing Jay Clayton as SEC chairman. Clayton\u2019s name had been announced as Berman\u2019s replacement in the US Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Berman had not been presidentially nominated as US attorney and was instead serving in a temporary capacity as a judicial appointee since early 2018.<\/p>\n
