Actress Chiara Aurelia goes through a dramatic transformation in Freeform\u2019s mystery series<\/a> \u201cCruel Summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m., it\u2019s executive- produced by Jessica Biel<\/a> and takes place over three summers in the 1990s, following mousy Jeanette Turner (Aurelia) and popular Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt). <\/p>\n

During the show\u2019s arc, Kate mysteriously disapp<\/a>ears, while Jeanette progresses from wallflower to popular girl to hated outsider \u2014 seemingly stealing Kate\u2019s life while she\u2019s gone (including her friends and boyfriend). Did Jeanette have any culpability in Kate\u2019s disappearance? Everyone in their small Texas town seems to think so.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aurelia, 18, who\u2019s also appeared in \u201cPretty Little Liars,\u201d \u201cAgent Carter\u201d and Amazon\u2019s \u201cTell Me Your Secrets\u201d, answered some questions for The Post.<\/p>\n

What attracted you to \u201cCruel Summer?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are some incredible female creatives and a wonderful cast and a good opportunity for a complex and unique female role [in] watching [Jeanette] grow and change and develop over these really crazy years in her life.<\/p>\n

Did you read or watch anything to prepare for the show\u2019s tone?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really liked \u201cThe Talented Mr. Ripley\u201d and \u201cCape Fear,\u201d which were great. I was doing some \u201990s movie research to get in the vein of this and I ended up seeing a lot of wonderful projects. We did get a \u201990s teenage list of movies to watch like \u201cDazed and Confused\u201d and \u201cClueless,\u201d and [the ABC series] \u201cMy So-Called Life,\u201d which was cool.<\/p>\n

How did you approach playing Jeanette? She\u2019s nearly a different character in the show\u2019s three timelines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I think there\u2019s a baseline of who she is as a person and what her relationships entail and how she feels about certain people and her family and all that jazz. And then there\u2019s more excess physical appearance changes. I think we all have parts of ourselves that we might tap into more at times, and I think she\u2019s just feeling a really strong magnitude of some drastic feelings as a young teenager. Part of what made it so wonderful was that each year was even more fun to play\u2026so being able to tap into \u201993, \u201994 and \u201995 was a great experience. Jumping around in the years could be difficult at times, when you go into a day and start in \u201995 and then go to \u201993 or \u201994, sometimes it could feel like you\u2019re getting whiplash, like, \u201cWhere am I and what\u2019s going on?\u201d But they kept us pretty grounded in the story.<\/p>\n

Did you know how the show\u2019s mystery pans out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I had the right amount of backstory to make educated choices about what\u2019s going on in Jeanette\u2019s head. But I did not know the ending until I got the last episode. I think there were still a lot of mysteries that were left uncompleted for us as a cast. I was very surprised and excited \u2014 there\u2019s a lot of twists and turns and it\u2019s a great, bumpy ride.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
