And wouldn\u2019t you know it, the streaming services have been equally plentiful this month. We\u2019ve got hotly-anticipated genre fare that caused a stir on the festival circuit. As Maud\u2019s obsession with saving the \u201cdegenerate\u201d Amanda festers, Maud\u2019s own less-than sanctimonious past threatens to snuff out the would-be saint\u2019s fervent faith.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The debut feature of writer-director <strong>Rose Glass<\/strong> \u2014 which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 in the Midnight Madness program \u2014 is a chilling tale of belief, madness, and the blurry line in-between. Catholicism has long-served the horror genre and <em><strong>Saint Maud <\/strong><\/em>is a worthy new disciple, writhing in tandem with the likes of\u00a0<em>Mother Joan of the Angels\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Carrie. <\/em><strong>Morfydd Clark<\/strong>\u2018s performance as Maud is as enthralling as it is disquieting, capturing that uncannily impressionable volatility that defines many of cinema\u2019s more unsettling protagonists. The horror film does an unnervingly good job of muddying the waters of dogmatism and paranoia; slowly bringing the world of our misguided martyr to a boil of dread-filled malaise. A really big worm? The skeleton of an old pet? Well, when sibling duo Mimi and Luke go digging, they find something big, unexpected, and bloodthirsty: an evil ancient alien warlord who wants to destroy the universe. At first, it\u2019s all fun and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and \u201cusing the magic pink amulet to force the evil alien to submit to their childish whims.\u201d But after resurrecting the creature, who they nickname Psycho Goreman (or PG for short), the siblings accidentally send out a signal to space, alerting other, weirder, aliens of PG\u2019s presence. Suddenly their small-town suburban home becomes a blood-soaked, intergalactic battlefield.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I know what you\u2019re thinking: <em>E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\u00a0<\/em>would have been infinitely better if that little alien was a homicidal maniac hellbent on taking over the galaxy. Enter: <em><strong>Psycho Goreman\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(2020), the latest fever dream from <em>The Void <\/em>writer-director<strong> Steven Kostanski<\/strong>. Unlike other \u201cchild befriends monster\u201d flicks,\u00a0<em>Psycho Goreman\u00a0<\/em>doesn\u2019t just deliver gore. It delivers \u201crip your body part off and fight you with it\u201d gore. So what if it\u2019s only May? Our own Rob Hunter has already declared this child-exploding, intergalactic gorefest the movie of the year.<\/p>\n<p>A playful callback to a time before CGI came in and ruined everyone\u2019s latex-fueled fun, <em>Psycho Goreman\u00a0<\/em>is an absolute bloodbath of high-energy silliness that you\u2019d be a fool to pass up. Plus, <strong>Nita-Josee Hanna\u2019<\/strong>s performance as Mimi is arguably one of the most joyfully devious things you\u2019re liable to see this year. Heard that one before? Just wait. This one has zombies. It\u2019s the heist of the apocalypse! The target? A lucrative vault located beneath the Las Vegas s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>. The catch? The city is in the thrall of an undead outbreak. Oh, right, and the government is going to nuke the entire city in thirty-two hours. But with that much cash and glory on the line, it\u2019s a gamble worth taking.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Army of the Dead<\/strong> <\/em>(2021) promises a blend of two genre film mainstays: a high-stakes heist and an undead horde. The embers have barely cooled on <strong>Zack Snyder<\/strong>\u2018s much-discussed four-hour long director\u2019s cut of\u00a0<em>Justice League<\/em>. But look, you can\u2019t show me a zombified showgirl and <em>not\u00a0<\/em>expect me to lose my mind. It gives a whole new meaning to the quote \u201cthere\u2019s always someone younger and hungrier coming down the stairs after you.\u201d Like, yeah, and she\u2019ll probably rip out your Achilles tendons with her teeth!<\/p>\n<p><em>Army of the Dead <\/em>will be Snyder\u2019s first foray outside the DC Extended Universe since 2011\u2019s <em>Sucker Punch<\/em>. The horror film also marks an interesting return to form of sorts. <em>Dawn of the Dead, <\/em>a high-octane remake of George A. Romero\u2019s 1978 classic, announced Snyder\u2019s feature film debut all the way back in 2004. So here we are, nearly two decades later, back where it all began: zombies! Starring <strong>Dave Bautista<\/strong> in the lead role with guns-for-hire including the likes of Ella Purnell and Tig Notaro, <em>Army of the Dead <\/em>boasts\u00a0a lesser-seen (zombified) side of Snyder, so color us intrigued!<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arriving_on_Netflix_on_May_21st\"><\/span>Arriving on Netflix on May 21st<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_vampiric_throwback_from_a_master_of_horror_with_a_newly-announced_project\"><\/span>A vampiric throwback from a master of horror with a newly-announced project<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-365001 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Rabid-cronenberg.jpg\" alt=\"Rabid Cronenberg\" width=\"800\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Rabid-cronenberg.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Rabid-cronenberg-768x460.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Synopsis: After a motorcycle accident tears her body to shreds, Rose undergoes a radical, experimental surgical procedure. She emerges from the ordeal in one piece. In fact, she emerges with a few\u2026extra pieces. Namely: a phallic, vampiric <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>endage in her armpit and an insatiable thirst for human blood. As Rose\u2019s thirst begins to spread throughout Montreal, the powers that be fail to contain the mounting outbreak.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We capped off the month of April with the announcement that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/04\/david-cronenberg-sci-fi-movie-crimes-of-the-future-shoot-1234633841\/\">the boys <\/a>(David Cronenberg and long-time collaborator Viggo Mortensen)<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/04\/david-cronenberg-sci-fi-movie-crimes-of-the-future-shoot-1234633841\/\"> are back in town<\/a>. It\u2019s been seven years since the release of\u00a0<em>Maps to the Stars <\/em>and Canada\u2019s purveying Baron of Blood is back in the saddle, baby. Not only that, but he\u2019s returning to one of his old projects, <em>Crimes of the Future<\/em>, his second (almost) feature-length film. And if Cronenberg is going back to his old work, frankly, we should do the same.<\/p>\n<p>There are two sides to the <em><strong>Rabid<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1977) coin. The first has to do with its unavoidable controversy. The horror film was, in many ways, a direct and defiant response to the criticism and censorship that Cronenberg encountered with his first commercial film, <em>Shivers<\/em>. If the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> wanted to call his films pornographic, why not cast former porn actress <strong>Marilyn Chambers<\/strong> as the sympathetic lead? The other side of the coin (not unrelated to the first), is that it would be a mistake to dismiss <em>Rabid\u00a0<\/em>as \u201cthe armpit penis movie.\u201d <em>Rabid\u00a0<\/em>is, fundamentally, about government-like institutions failing to contain and manage a public health crisis. So for all its queasy violence and psycho-sexual imagery, the film\u2019s representation of inaction during an outbreak is truly its more stomach-churning legacy<\/p>\n<h5><span
