\n It was the mother of all mix-ups.<\/p>\n

A North Carolina memorial went south after a son peered in his late mom\u2019s casket to discover a total stranger wearing her clothing and jewelry in what undertakers are calling a funeral first.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew what she looked like the minute she left my home,\u201d said Jerry Bowman, the son of 75-year-old Catherine B. White, who was supposed to be in the coffin at the Alexander Funeral Home after dying of cancer on June 26, reports Fox 46. Instead, she had been mistakenly interred at York Memorial Park on July 2 by the family of Elease McInnis, 91, the deceased woman that Bowman had found in his mom\u2019s place.<\/p>\n

McInnis reportedly died in the same city a day earlier before being transported to the same funeral facility, the Mirror reports.<\/p>\n

Some of McInnis\u2019 family members thought she looked different during the burial but chalked it up to the embalming process. They never imagined it was an entirely different woman.<\/p>\n

Both families have since confirmed the cadaver mix-up, although funeral professionals remain flummoxed by how the fiasco could\u2019ve occurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t run into a problem like that if you are on top of your game<\/a>,\u201d said Palmer Dupree Sr. of Long & Son Mortuary Services. He added that families should expect a thorough process, which includes meticulously tagging the deceased\u2019s remains before bringing them to the funeral home.<\/p>\n

The North Carolina Board of Funeral Service even requires the body to have \u201ca tag of durable, non-corroding material permanently marked with the name of the deceased, the date of death, the social<\/a> security number of the deceased, the county and state of death, and the site of interment or entombment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Alexander Funeral Home declined to comment to local media on the disastrous postmortem switcheroo, which has shaken both families.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t deserve this. Nobody deserves this,\u201d said Bowman, an ER doctor who was the full-time caretaker for his mother at the time of her death. Meanwhile, a member of McInnis\u2019 family told Fox 46 they were \u201cheartbroken and embarrassed\u201d over the disaster.<\/p>\n

And the ordeal isn\u2019t over yet. The McInnis family will now have to grant permission for White\u2019s body to be exhumed from York Memorial Park.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first mortuary mishap to make headlines recently. In April, a mother woke up in a body bag after being pronounced dead by doctors earlier that day in Paraguay.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
