The co-star of <em><strong>Steel Magnolias<\/strong><\/em> and three-time Emmy nominee has died at age 89.<span id=\"more-669441\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The death of Olympia Dukakis was first announced on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/apollo.dukakis\/posts\/2174035896072022?notif_id=1619889601059204&amp;notif_t=comment_mention&amp;ref=notif\">Facebook<\/a> (via <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/olympia-dukakis-oscar-winning-moonstruck-193537414.html\">Yahoo News<\/a>) by her brother Apollo Dukakis, who wrote, \u201cy beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.\u201d The passing of Dukakis was also confirmed to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/olympia-dukakis-academy-awards-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-cf464034c35905634279d693301bda82\">Associated Press<\/a> by her agent Allison Levy.<\/p>\n<p>The career of Olympia Dukakis on screen began in the 1960s with bit parts in shows like <em><strong>The Doctors and the Nurses<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>Dr. Kildare<\/em><\/strong>, but she soon jumped to the big screen with small roles in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> such as the short <strong><em>Twice a Man<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>John and Mary<\/em><\/strong>. Her work in movies increased significantly throughout the 1970s with small roles in movies like <strong><em>Made for Each Other<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>The Rehearsal<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Death Wish<\/em><\/strong>, but she also returned to TV with a role in the <strong><em>Great Performances<\/em> <\/strong>production of <strong><em>The Seagull<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Doctors<\/em><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->The 1980s saw Dukakis star in movies like <strong><em>The Idolmaker<\/em><\/strong> and <em><strong>Walls of Glass<\/strong><\/em>, TV shows such as <strong><em>Search for Tomorrow<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Equalizer<\/em><\/strong>, and the TV movie<strong><em> One of the Boys<\/em><\/strong>. But in 1987 came her big break with the Oscar-winning supporting performance in <em>Moonstruck<\/em> alongside Cher and Nicolas Cage. When she won the award, she declared 1988 as \u201cthe year of the Dukakii\u201d because it was also the year Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, her cousin, was the Democratic Party\u2019s presidential nominee. But it\u2019s safe to say that things went better for Olympia than Michael.<\/p>\n<p>After her Oscar win, Dukakis could be spotted playing similar kind of mother-type characters in <strong><em>Look Who\u2019s Talking<\/em><\/strong> and the two sequels that followed, as well as the wealthy widow in <strong><em>Steel Magnolias<\/em><\/strong>. She also <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in <strong><em>The Cemetery Club<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>I Love Trouble<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Mighty Aphrodite<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Mr. Holland\u2019s Opus<\/em><\/strong>. Dukakis also had an uncredited role as herself in the spoof sequel <strong><em>The Naked Gun 33 1\/3: The Final Insult<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Though Dukakis only earned one Oscar nomination and win, she was nominated for three Emmys in the 1990s, two supporting actress turns in the TV movie <strong><em>Lucky Day<\/em> <\/strong>and the miniseries <strong><em>Joan of Arc<\/em><\/strong>, and a lead actress nomination for <strong><em>More Tales of the City<\/em><\/strong>, in which she reprised her miniseries role that she originated in <strong><em>Tales of the City<\/em><\/strong> in 1993. She would play the same role again in <strong><em>Further Tales of the City<\/em><\/strong> in 2001 and in the revival<em><strong> Tales of the City<\/strong><\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other roles included TV movies <strong><em>The Pentagon Wars<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Last of the Blonde Bombshells<\/em><\/strong>, as well as TV show appearances in <strong><em>Touched by an Angel<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>The Simpsons<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Frasier<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Bored to Death<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Numb3rs<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Law &amp; Order: SVU<\/em><\/strong>. And Dukakis kept working in movies with <strong><em>The Infiltrator<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Change is in the Air<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em> The Last Keepers<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>A Little <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears we\u2019ll see Dukakis\u2019 last performance as a judge in the upcoming movie <strong><em>Not to Forget<\/em><\/strong>.
