Mark Zuckerberg is again expanding his empire in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The billionaire Facebook<\/a> founder and wife Priscilla Chan bought 600 more acres of land in Hawaii, according to local business journal Pacific Business News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pair purchased the land, which includes Larsen\u2019s Beach, for $53 million from the nonprofit Waioli Corp. The couple now owns more than 1,300 acres on the island of Kauai.<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg began assemblying his fief on the in Hawaii in 2014 with the 357-acre Kahuaina Plantation. <\/p>\n

Building permits totaling more than $83 million include an app<\/a>lication for a 57,059 square-foot single-family home.<\/p>\n

The Waioli traces its roots back to the Wilcox family, descended from missionaries to Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The couple said they are \u201cmindful\u201d of the nonprofit organization\u2019s perseveration work in a statement to the business journal. Waioli \u201cauthentically [preserves] numerous historic sites and collections around the island,\u201d according to its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Waioli president Sam Pratt said the nonprofit decided to sell the land \u201cafter much consideration,\u201d according to sfgate.com<\/a>. \u201cThe decision provides Waioli with the financial ability to be able to continue our critical conservation and historical work and ensure that Kauai\u2019s cultural history continues to be shared in the community for years to come,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that this land will remain in their trusted hands and that Mark and Priscilla will act as responsible stewards of Lepeuli today and in the future,\u201d Pratt said, referring to an area also known as Larsen\u2019s Beach. Public beach access will not be restricted, County Planning Director Ka\u2019aina Hull told The Garden Island newspaper<\/a>. At least part of Zuckerberg\u2019s assemblage is owned through Pila\u2019a International, LLC, according to that outlet.<\/p>\n

An online petition<\/a> that Zuckerberg stop \u201ccolonizing\u201d Kauai had 1,014,188 signatures as of Saturday afternoon. \u201cMark Zuckerberg is the sixth richest man in the world\u2026 and he is suing Native Hawaiians in Kauai for their land so he can build a mansion,\u201d the petition reads. \u201cHe\u2019s building a mansion to what? Live in Kauai for two months out of the year? This is inhuman.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2017, Zuckerberg\u00a0filed suit\u00a0against native Hawaiians owning tiny parcels surrounded by his land to force them to sell their land at auction so he could \u201cenhance\u201d his privacy.<\/p>\n

So-called \u201ckuleana land\u201d is ancestral land of native Hawaiians. The state of Hawaii provides a property-tax exemption in order to help native Hawaiians keep their land. \u201cOn Kaua\u02bbi, kuleana land owners may be eligible for a flat $150 tax,\u201d according to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the face of neocolonialism,\u201d University of Hawaii law professor Kapua Sproat told<\/a> the Guardian at the time. \u201cEven though a forced sale may not physically displace people, it\u2019s the last nail in the coffin of separating us from the land.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tech CEO\u00a0dropped the lawsuits<\/a>\u00a0but was\u00a0accused in 2019<\/a>\u00a0of pressing ahead through a local resident, Carlos Andrade, to sue on his behalf. <\/p>\n

The petition\u2019s listed organizer, Mia Brier, couldn\u2019t be reached.<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg caught heat in 2016 for building a six-foot-high fence around the perimeter of his then-just-700 acre property.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
