She\u2019ll probably tell you that the job search process is even more frustrating than trying to get a teenager to clean their room. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was demoralizing and discouraging,\u201d said Cinda Amyx, now a global marketing partner at software giant <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sap.com\/index.html\">SAP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Allentown, NJ, resident spent an entire year <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lying for opportunities. While Amyx was able to land a few interviews, she wasn\u2019t hired, despite the fact that her resume not only included project manager positions at some of the world\u2019s most admired companies but also a consulting gig at a Ph.D. program at MIT. <\/p>\n<p>So, what was the problem? Amyx\u2019s career didn\u2019t follow a linear path, and, fairly or unfairly, her experience as a stay-at-home mother didn\u2019t count for much. \u201cI was competing for jobs with professionals who never left the workplace,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>With a record-setting two million-plus women having left the workforce since the pandemic began, \u201cthe situation is likely to get worse,\u201d according to Tami Forman, executive director of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pathforward.org\/\">Path Forward<\/a>. The New York City-based nonprofit\u2019s mission is to give people who have taken time out of the workforce to care for loved ones a path to re-enter. <\/p>\n<p>For parents who hadn\u2019t planned to step out of their jobs to care for family, not only have they lost the paychecks they had been banking on, but also employer contributions to their retirement programs and seniority in their jobs \u2014 plus, get this, their skills could already have become out of date.<\/p>\n<p>In response, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\">LinkedIn<\/a> has recently added \u201cstay-at-home mom,\u201d \u201cstay-at-home dad\u201d and \u201cstay-at-home parent\u201d options to their profiles. Prior to that, there had to be a company name associated with every job title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The change] allows full-time parents and caretakers to more accurately display their roles,\u201d wrote Bef Ayenew, an engineering leader at LinkedIn. <\/p>\n<p>Job re-entry can also be stressful, ego-shattering and disorienting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to work to reconnect with the professional image of myself and recognize that my intellect and capabilities haven\u2019t changed since I left [the workforce],\u201d said Beth Frasco, now a program manager at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcuniversal.com\/\">NBCUniversal Media<\/a>. NBCUniversal was so impressed with Frasco that they offered her a full-time position.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Zaharek, who has a master\u2019s degree, recently completed a software engineering immersive at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/generalassemb.ly\/\">General Assembly<\/a> to show employers that she had the training needed to hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it wasn\u2019t until the Newtown, Conn., resident connected with Path Forward that she was led to information about Audible\u2019s paid returnship program, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audiblecareers.com\/Returnship-Program\">Next Chapter<\/a>, out of Newark, NJ. Through Path Forward, she was able to access webinars about the company\u2019s specific program, attend recruiter roundtables and see what it takes to ace the returnship interview. There\u2019s also content on what it takes to be successful once you land the gig.<\/p>\n<p>Returnships typically last several weeks or months, and it\u2019s only after you\u2019ve been successful that you are offered a permanent job. Luckily, that happens more often than not: More than 80 percent of returnees become employees. Like Amyx, for example, who was initially brought into SAP via the company\u2019s returnship program, Path Forward at SAP NYC, at the end of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have my mojo back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TIPS_FOR_SUCCESS\"><\/span>TIPS FOR SUCCESS <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep up with the latest trends in your profession during your time outside of the workplace, said Amyx. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Be gentle with yourself. Especially at a time like this, remember that you are competing against many extremely talented individuals, said Zaharek. Cut yourself some slack once you restart your work life. It\u2019s not easy to balance everything. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider pro bono activities before you start searching for work, including career-building projects. You can also take leadership positions in volunteer organizations while you\u2019re parenting children, said Frasco.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
