Boxer F\u00e9lix Verdejo turned himself in to federal authorities in Puerto Rico on Sunday to face charges in the disapp<\/a>earance\u00a0and death of his 27-year-old pregnant girlfriend, officials said.<\/p>\n

Verdejo, 27, is accused of abducting Keishla Rodr\u00edguez and killing her by throwing her off of a bridge in San Juan at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI.<\/p>\n

Authorities allege that Verdejo injected his lover with a syringe containing an unidentified substance \u2014 before binding her arms and feet with wire and tying a heavy block to her.<\/p>\n

The fighter allegedly shot at Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s body in the water as he stood on the bridge.<\/p>\n

A witness who wasn\u2019t identified in the complaint is said to have helped Verdejo kidnap and kill Rodr\u00edguez.<\/p>\n

Her body was found in a lagoon in the US territory\u2019s capital Saturday, a few days after she was reported missing.<\/p>\n

She was identified earlier Sunday using dental records, according to Puerto Rico\u2019s Institute of Forensic Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Verdejo \u2014 a lightweight contender who represented Puerto Rico at the 2012 Olympic game<\/a>s \u2014 was first brought in for questioning by local police on Friday as \u201ca person of interest\u201d in Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n

An FBI spokeswoman told the Associated Press that charges against Verdejo were being filed and would soon be announced.<\/p>\n

The boxer and his attorneys previously declined comment.<\/p>\n

Verdejo is married but had known Rodr\u00edguez since middle school and kept in touch with her,\u00a0according to the woman\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

Keila Ortiz, the victim\u2019s mother, has said that her daughter was pregnant with Verdejo\u2019s child.<\/p>\n

She said Verdejo had told her daughter not to have the baby, mentioning his career and family.<\/p>\n

Rodr\u00edguez apparently called her mom before she vanished Thursday and said that Verdejo was going to her house to see the results of a pregnancy test.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told her, \u2018Be careful,\u2019 because he had already threatened her,\u2033 Ortiz said.<\/p>\n
