the deadly COVID pandemic, portending a strong bounce for the overall economy in the second half of 2021. <\/p>\n<p> However, fears of a sustained rise in inflation and concerns that much of the economy\u2019s rebound has been priced into equity valuations has created some unease among investors and has the potential to knock stocks around. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_stock_benchmarks_performing\"><\/span>How are stock benchmarks performing?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       advanced 261 points, or 0.8%, to 34,136. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.47%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were up 21 points, or 0.5%, to 4,202.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.20%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 26 points, or 0.2%, to 13,989.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Friday, the Dow posted a weekly decline of 0.5%, but notched a 2.4% gain in April, while the S&amp;P 500 was virtually unchanged, but gained 5.6% last month. The Nasdaq Composite Index registered a weekly loss of 0.4% but jumped 7% in April. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Charlie Munger \u2018hates\u2019 bitcoin\u2019s rise: \u2018disgusting and contrary to interests of civilization\u2019<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_driving_the_market\"><\/span>What\u2019s driving the market? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Investors have been keenly focused on the recovery of U.S. corporations in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, with some of the biggest companies affirming that a genuine rebound is under way. <\/p>\n<p>That rebound was at least partially on display in light of the performance of conglomerate <strong>Berkshire Hathaway<\/strong><br \/>\n        BRK.A,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208872451\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.96%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        BRK.B,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200060694\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.78%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which reported a 20% jump in its operating profit, rising to $7.02 billion from $5.87 billion in the year prior.<\/p>\n<p>Berkshire, helmed by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/berkshire-hathaway-posts-11-7-billion-profit-on-stock-market-gains-11619871894?mod=searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1\" class=\"icon none\">over the weekend<\/a> also reported first-quarter net income of $11.7 billion, compared with a loss of $49.7 billion, in the year-earlier period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Berkshire\u2019s Munger: Stock buybacks for benefit of shareholders a \u2018deeply moral\u2019 act<\/p>\n<p>Performances like that of Berkshire\u2019s has helped to bolster confidence in equities at the start of the month that has traditionally been associated with a comparatively weak six-month seasonal stretch of trading starting in May. Of the S&amp;P 500 companies that have reported results so far, 86% have beaten earnings expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look for a positive start of trading in May as investors are likely to adopt to sideways movements, while staying clear of \u2018Selling And Going Away In May\u2019,\u201d wrote Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Investors also saw positive developments from Europe, bolstering confidence in the eurozone recovery. The European Commission on Monday proposed allowing entry by non-essential <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ers who have been fully vaccinated to the region.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, investors are watching for further commentary from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who is scheduled to speak at 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time at the Just Economy conference, which is being held virtually. <\/p>\n<p>Anxieties surrounding the Fed\u2019s response to a stronger economy also has investors on edge after Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan said Friday\u00a0that he believes it is time to discuss tapering the central bank\u2019s asset purchases. <\/p>\n<p>Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at The Economic Outlook Group, recently wrote that the Fed will have to walk a fine line as it eventually dials up interest rates and tapers an asset-purchasing program that has helped to support markets during the height of the pandemic-inspired stock selling in March. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what should the Fed do at this stage? Frankly, nothing major at this time. But as the economy regains its footing, Powell will face one truly vexing issue later this year: How do you reduce asset purchases without causing major turbulence in the bond market?\u201d wrote Baumohl. <\/p>\n<p>On the economic data front, market participants will sift through manufacturing reports in April, headlined by the manufacturing index from the Institute for Supply Management due at 10 a.m. The Markit\u2019s manufacturing index for the U.S. came in at 60.5 for April. Any number above 50 marks an increase in factory activity.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a weaker tone of manufacturing and services activity in China and recession in Europe were blamed for a slide in stocks on Friday. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_companies_are_in_focus\"><\/span>Which companies are in focus? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Shares of Berkshire\u2019s Class B shares<br \/>\n        BRK.B,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200060694\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.78%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were up 1.6% after Buffett said Greg Abel, the conglomerate\u2019s vice chairman in charge of non-insurance operations, would be his successor\u00a0as CEO if Buffett left the job.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Tesla Inc<\/strong>. shares<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were trading lower by 2% after a German trade magazine reported that Tesla\u2019s gigafactory in Berlin is likely to be delayed by six months.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Verizon Communications Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        VZ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204980236\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.42%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       inched higher after it announced it would sell Verizon <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a>, including Yahoo and AOL brands, for $5 billion to private equity firm Apollo Global.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Domino\u2019s Pizza Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        DPZ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201587798\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.49%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0said in a Monday filing that it has entered into a $1 billion accelerated share repurchase agreement with Barclays.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>Stop Corp.<\/strong><br \/>\n        GME,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203755179\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.03%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0rose 0.3%, after the videogame and consumer electronics retailer announced it has effectively eliminated its long-term debt.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Est\u00e9e Lauder Companies<\/strong><br \/>\n        EL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200740220\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-5.58%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares\u00a0slid 4.4%, after the cosmetics and beauty company posted stronger-than-expected profit for its fiscal third quarter but sales that missed estimates.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_other_assets_faring\"><\/span>How are other assets faring?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      In Asia, Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng index<br \/>\n        HSI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598030\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.28%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 1.3%.
