CIA Director William Burns lauded the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd last month as \u201cone step forward\u201d in \u201caddressing the broader trauma of racism and persistent inequity in our nation\u201d in a memo to agency staff, The Federalist reported<\/a> Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Burns, a career diplomat who served in the Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama administrations, also pledged to prioritize \u201caccountability\u201d and \u201cprogress on diversity, equity and inclusion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The agency did not immedia<\/a>tely return a request by the Post to confirm the memo\u2019s existence or comment on the app<\/a>ropriateness of the CIA director discussing domestic criminal trials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chauvin was convicted April 20 of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter of Floyd, who died on May 25 of last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chauvin knelt on Floyd\u2019s neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds while attempting to subdue and arrest him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The deadly encounter was captured on video and sparked a summer of racial unrest across America.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The CIA was already under fire for alleged inappropriate \u201cwokeism\u201d after it posted a recruitment video on Twitter featuring a 36-year-old Latina officer who narrated: \u201cI am a woman of color, I am a mom, I am a cisgender millennial who\u2019s been diagnosed with general<\/a>ized anxiety disorder \u2026 I am intersectional.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The video drew a furious response from right-wingers on social media, and words of caution from former CIA Director Mike Pompeo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI want my officers to be unapologetically competent,\u201d Pompeo told \u201cFox News<\/a> Primetime\u201d Monday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI want them to be brave. I want them to be daring. I want them to execute the mission. I don\u2019t want them to be about \u2018I\u2019 or \u2018me\u2019. I want them to be about the team.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy to have people from whatever gender, whatever race, all good,\u201d added Pompeo, who served as CIA director between January 2017 and April 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, the CIA should be recruiting on the fact that it is an unbelievably important institution \u2026 We shouldn\u2019t be talking about being woke as an attempt to recruit people. It\u2019s an enormous mistake. Frankly, we\u2019ll end up with less talented people if we focus on wokeism and not on competence and the mission set that the CIA has.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
