\n The NFL\u2019s Washington franchise has come closer than ever to changing its name, and it could be closing in on a new one.<\/p>\n

Since owner Daniel Snyder announced with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last Friday that the \u2018Redskins\u2019 name was going under review, \u2018Warriors\u2019 has emerged as a frontrunner for the franchise\u2019s new moniker, according to reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people do know that the Redskins have marked Washington Warriors just in case and that this has been the way\u2026\u201d The Team 980\u2019s Kevin Sheehan said on his podcast. \u201cI would bet big money on the Warriors being the new name for the football team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Sheehan referred to the name as the \u201cdefinite leader in the clubhouse,\u201d but confirms that there has not been an official reveal.<\/p>\n

After years of criticism and protests due to the franchise\u2019s name and logo, coupled with recent pressure from several sponsors and retailers, the club has decided to conduct a \u201cthorough review\u201d of its identity.<\/p>\n

For years, the franchise has defended the name, and Snyder himself long resisted the name change since he bought the team in 1999. During a 2013 interview, he famously said, \u201cWe\u2019ll never change the name. It\u2019s that simple. NEVER \u2014 you can use all caps.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Amazon officially pulled all Redskins gear from its stores, following Walmart, Target, Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods, and Nike. Corporate sponsors \u2014 including PepsiCo, Bank of America and and FedEx, which holds naming rights to the Redskins\u2019 stadium in Landover, Md. \u2014 have called on the franchise to find a new name.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
