\n Nostalgic cartoon fans rejoice!<\/p>\n

After a quarter-century hiatus, reclusive cartoonist Gary Larson has returned to penning his hilarious \u201cThe Far Side\u201d series<\/a> with three new digitally-drawn strip<\/a>s now available on his website. The Seattle illustrator accompanied his creation\u2019s second coming with a personal essay on why he decided to emerge from retirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018New Stuff\u2019 that you\u2019ll see here is the result of my journey into the world of digital art,\u201d wrote Larson, 69, regarding \u201cThe Far Side\u2019s\u201d virtual revival, which features Cub Scout-gobbling bears, humanitarian aliens and taxidermist taxis.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say, \u201cThe Far Side\u201d fans are in a frenzy over Larson\u2019s return.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome back!\u201d exclaimed one die-hard under a cartoon of a commuter hailing a taxi full of taxidermied animals. \u201cI thought you were gone forever. I am so happ<\/a>y to be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOhmygawd! The return of weirdness. Huzzah!\u201d posted another.<\/p>\n

Another complimented the \u201cNew Stuff\u2019s\u201d digital makeover: \u201cI love the new style. It\u2019s updated but still familiar. Still funny too!\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, while mirroring the tone of the original cartoons, the computerized iteration features a few aesthetic differences. The new \u201cThe Far Side\u201d cartoons are drawn on a digital tablet and not watercolor, which lends the drawings a more full-bodied, painterly feel, while the absence of penned outlines makes the characters seem less, well, cartoony.<\/p>\n

Still, \u201cThe Far Side\u2019s\u201d renaissance, which was teased by Larson last September, marks a return to form for the humorist, whose sardonic comic strip appeared in more than 1,900 daily news<\/a>papers from 1980 to 1995, and was the comedy muse for a generation of newsreaders, reports the Guardian.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Larson\u2019s impact wasn\u2019t limited to cartoon circles. One strip depicting a chimpanzee accused of philandering with Jane Goodall was lauded by the legendary primatologist herself. Meanwhile, \u201cthagomizer\u201d \u2014 Larson\u2019s term for a stegosaurus\u2019 spiky tail in honor of the \u201clate Thag Simmons\u201d per his cartoons \u2014 has become inducted into paleontological lexicon.<\/p>\n

The cartoonist abruptly retired in 1995 at 44, citing \u201csimple fatigue\u201d and a fear of ending up in \u201cthe Graveyard of Mediocre Cartoons\u201d should he continue drawing.<\/p>\n

However, despite \u201cfeeling good\u201d about announcing his retirement, Larson writes that he still \u201chad intermittent connections to cartooning,\u201d most notably drawing Christmas cards for his wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Far Side\u2019s\u201d resurrection was sparked when the cartoonist got fed up with his pen clogging while illustrating them and decided to try a tablet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got one, fired it up, and lo and behold, something totally unexpected happened: Within moments, I was having fun drawing again,\u201d writes Larson of his newfound creative fervor.<\/p>\n

The humorist says he \u201cwas stunned at all the tools the thing offered,\u201d and likened using the tablet to going from \u201ca world of pen and ink\u201d to \u201csitting at the controls of a 747.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larson admits he\u2019s still \u201cjust exploring, experimenting and trying stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want to try and take people somewhere where they might not have been before,\u201d he writes. \u201cI think that my approach to cartooning was similar \u2014 I\u2019m just not sure if even I<\/em> knew where I was going. But I was having fun.\u201d\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
