Imagine explaining to someone 10 years ago that the hottest shoes of 2021 are Crocs.<\/p>\n

Yes, Crocs. The holey rubber utility shoes beloved by hard-working chefs, kids on the go and gardening grandmas. The ones that, in 2008, \u201cProject Runway\u201d <\/em>guru Tim Gunn described as looking like<\/a> \u201ca plastic\u00a0hoof\u201d and said: \u201cIf you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, don\u2019t get out of bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

But trendsetters like Justin Bieber<\/a>, Post Malone, Priyanka Chopra and Bad Bunny<\/a> have all released exclusive collaborations, often decorated with goofy charms<\/a> called Jibbitz, with the brand in the past few years. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s paid off. Shares in the company \u2014 founded in 2001 and launched at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, of all unfashionable places \u2014 hit an all-time high last week, with sales surging to $460 million in just the first three months of 2021.<\/p>\n

And while the pandemic lockdown had everyone ditching their heels and leather loafers for more comfy options, it\u2019s not solely responsible for the Crocs boom, says Noah Zagor, senior menswear editor at WGSN, a trend forecasting group. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe were heading this way anyway,\u201d Zagor told The Post.<\/p>\n

He links consumers\u2019 embrace of the bulbous, aggressively unattractive shoes with the larger dad-core trend in fashion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt coincided with resort Hawaiian-style shirts\u201d having a moment, and is part of a \u201ccrunchy, tourist, granola-style backpacking\u201d aesthetic, he said. <\/p>\n

Besides, while older people may remember them from the aughts as the ugly shoe, \u201cI\u2019m sure there are teenagers out there who see the Bad Bunny pair and have no negative connotation to Crocs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Another bonus: Crocs come in bright colors and designs. \u201cWe\u2019re all so joyless,\u201d writer Lauren Mechling, who runs the popular Instagram page @TheClogLife<\/a>, told The Post. Crocs have \u201calmost a clownish jolliness\u201d to them that\u2019s much needed during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Starting around $50 a pair for adults, they\u2019re also affordable.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of us are unemployed or underemployed, Crocs are super cheap\u201d and cost significantly less than trendy (and expensive) Rachel Comey or No. 6 clogs, Mechling said. <\/p>\n

Although her followers originally protested when she posted pics of Crocs, they\u2019ve changed their tune as celebrities continue to be photographed in them. Questlove rocked them on the Oscars red carpet last week<\/a>, and Nicholas Braun of \u201cSuccession\u201d fame wore them to the Emmys in September. When Vice President Harris\u2019 step-daughter Ella Emhoff released a line of knitwear in February, she stated<\/a> that \u201cthe dress is only allowed to be worn with Crocs.\u201d Fashion icon Heidi Klum sported a yellow pair in January. <\/p>\n

But not every star is on board. Last week, Victoria Beckham said she would \u201crather die\u201d<\/a> than wear the Crocs sent to her by Justin Bieber. \u201cQueer Eye\u201d style expert Tan France is equally turned off<\/a> by the style. \u201cDon\u2019t wear Crocs \u2026 because nobody will sleep with you. If you want to remain celibate, wear Crocs,\u201d he said in 2020. <\/p>\n

And though life is beginning to return to normal and sales of \u201cbusiness\u201d clothes are on the rise, Zagor doesn\u2019t expect we\u2019ll see the death of Crocs anytime soon. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ll fade away from the fashion light for a while,\u201d he said. \u201cI think guys are just going to have Crocs in their arsenal of footwear, with loafers, a pair of Air Force Ones, Vans or Chucks. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt just becomes, \u2018That\u2019s a practical shoe to have in my life,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As for women, Chopra \u2014\u00a0who, don\u2019t forget, is a brand ambassador and paid to say things like this \u2014 speculated about how she would wear them to a big event.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were to wear Crocs on a red carpet, I would wear the Crocs sandal because it has a heel. And I would wear that with a dress that had a slit, so that you can see one side of the leg and it would add length to it,\u201d she told Elle. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll believe it when we see it.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
