Looks like\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em><\/strong> suffered a\u00a0fatality<\/em> at the box office (get it, because that\u2019s a thing they say in the game<\/a>s?). The latest attempt to turn the video game franchise into a film was number one at the box office the last time we spoke of these things, but in the week since, it\u2019s fallen to number two while the anime<\/a>\u00a0Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 which had previously been in second place \u2013 climbed to number one. But in both cases, the two top films lost 70% of their audiences, which isn\u2019t a great sign for the box office in general<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It seems like only yesterday that we were all thinking the theatrical experience might be in good shape following the pandemic. Movies<\/a> like\u00a0Tom and Jerry<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> <\/strong>were doing better than expected, and then the anime\u00a0Demon Slayer: Mugen Train<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and the live-action\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> both ended up in a fight to claim the top spot.\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> ultimately won \u2013 at first.
\nNow, a week later,\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em> has climbed from number two to number one. That\u2019s abnormal box office behavior, and while it could<\/em> suggest that things are starting to get back to normal, things don\u2019t look so hot when you break down the numbers. As Forbes<\/a> reports,\u00a0Demon Slayer<\/em> \u201cgrossed $6.426 million in weekend two, a drop of 71% from\u201d a $21.14 million debut.\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> earned\u00a0$6.235 million, but also dropped \u201c73% from its $23.3 million domestic debut.\u201d For comparison\u2019s sake, the absolutely\u00a0terrible<\/em> movie\u00a0Mortal Kombat: Annihilation<\/em> only dropped off 59% during its second weekend. You can probably figure out why the new\u00a0Mortal Kombat<\/em> had such a harsh fall-off: it\u2019s also available on HBO Max.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in box office land,\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> held at third place, the awful indie horror film\u00a0Separation<\/em><\/strong> came in at number four, and Disney\u2019s\u00a0Raya and the Last Dragon<\/em><\/strong> is sitting at number five. Perhaps the biggest success story, though, is\u00a0Scott Pilgrim vs. The World<\/em><\/strong>. The film had a 10th-anniversary re-release over the weekend and came in at number eight. When originally released 10 years ago,\u00a0Scott Pilgrim<\/em>\u00a0flopped \u2013 it opened in fifth place and dropped out of the top 10 by its second weekend. Seeing it land in the top 10 for its re-release is a fun little bit of news<\/a>.<\/p>\n

May is bound to be a much busier month for new movies than we\u2019ve had in a while \u2013\u00a0Wrath of Man<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Spiral: From the Book of Saw<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Those Who Wish Me Dead<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Cruella<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0A Quiet Place Part II<\/em> <\/strong>are all headed to theaters, although some of them will have options for streaming as well.<\/p>\n
