“#Janet Yellen clarifies inflation comments after roiling Wall Street<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Tuesday she wasn\u2019t expecting an inflation problem as the U.S. economy rebounds, walking back comments that unsettled markets hours earlier.<\/p>\n

Yellen had said earlier in the day that interest rates may need to be hiked in order to stave off inflation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo let me be clear: That\u2019s not something I\u2019m predicting or recommending,\u201d Yellen said during a Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Federal Reserve would make the decision on rate hikes. Yellen, a former Fed chair, said it could be counted on to manage the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anybody app<\/a>reciates the independence of the Fed, I think that person is me,\u201d Yellen said.<\/p>\n

Yellen was asked directly about the hikes because of her remarks from earlier in the day during The Atlantic\u2019s Future Economy Summit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic\u2019s Rob Brownstein asked Yellen how the economy could sustain the extra spending from federal COVID-19 relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt may be that interest rates will have to rise somewhat to make sure that our economy doesn\u2019t overheat,\u201d Yellen said.<\/p>\n

The comments temporarily shook financial markets.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Warren Buffett said the U.S. economy was \u201cred hot\u201d but warned of the threat of inflation as businesses and jobs come back.<\/p>\n

The Berkshire Hathaway executive told shareholders there was \u201calmost a buying in frenzy\u201d in many segments of the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a very unusual recession,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
