The course de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201202163126\/https:\/scl.cornell.edu\/coe\/pe-courses\/spring-pe-courses\/rock-climbing\/BIPOC-rock-climbing\">according to The Cornell Daily Sun<\/a>, specified that the class was \u201cfor people who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That prompted an uproar from across the internet. The university was accused of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/cornell-removes-ban-on-whites-from-rock-climbing-course-after-media-attention\/\">violating federal and state civil rights law<\/a> while one <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit<\/a> user<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Cornell\/comments\/jr9vti\/end_racially_segregated_pe_classes_at_cornell\/\"> decried what they described<\/a> as a \u201chorrifically and monstrously racist practice that has no place in the modern world\u201d and \u201cliterally evil\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the course description for \u201cBIPOC Rock Climbing\u201d was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/coe\/pe-courses\/spring-pe-courses\/rock-climbing\/BIPOC-rock-climbing\">changed to read<\/a>: \u201cThis class is designed to enable Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other people of color underrepresented in the sport of rock climbing to learn the sport and to feel included and supported. The class is open to all Cornell students interested in learning rock climbing with this special focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University spokesperson John Carberry told the Daily Sun Monday that while such classes include \u201cmay include a focus on students with specific identities, they are not restricted to only those students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCornell offers many programs that support interests and perspectives of different parts of our community,\u201d he added. \u201cWe encourage any student who is interested to take advantage of the unique opportunities across campus to learn from and with the many diverse perspectives and voices across campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the semester winding down, students and instructors defended the course\u2019s emphasis on non-white students. One student, freshman Thomas Gambra, told the Daily Sun that \u201c[h]earing people complain about this class, saying it\u2019s taking away from our white peers is laughable and frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"The university has been accused of violating several federal laws with the new course.\" class=\"wp-image-18154117 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/cornell-university-bipoc-626.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/cornell-university-bipoc-626.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/cornell-university-bipoc-626.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/cornell-university-bipoc-626.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/cornell-university-bipoc-626.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Cornell University has been accused of violating several federal laws with the new BIPOC course.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instructor Matthew Gavieta, a junior, explained that the BIPOC course was meant to help alleviate what he called \u201can issue of inaccessibility for minorities in this white-centric sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another instructor, senior Michelle Croen, alleged that \u201cit\u2019s difficult to be a minority and feel welcomed in the outdoors,\u201d citing issues including \u201ccost of entry and accessibility [and] smaller microaggressions like the names of some outdoor climbing routes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust under the surface, the climbing world especially is affected by racism, sexism and size-ism,\u201d claimed Croen, who added that, \u201cby creating a community of traditionally underrepresented people, we allow students to explore climbing and what it means to them on their own terms, in a comfortable, safe space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/globallocator\/col_info_popup.asp?ID=190415\">According to the National Center for Education Statistics<\/a>, 36% of Cornell\u2019s 15,000-plus  undergraduate students in the fall of 2019 were white. The second-largest racial group was Asians (20%), followed by Hispanic\/Latino students (14%).
