Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to risk, vaccine hesitancy and increased <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>izing, not to mention relaxation of handwashing, mask wearing and COVID-related social-distancing practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The expectation of herd immunity making the world much safer may be a fine goal, health professionals say, but it\u2019s not entirely a realistic one given the number of people who will not get vaccinated due to fears about side effects or for other political and ideological reasons.<\/p>\n<p>And how can the U.S. return to relative normalcy when parts of the developing world, and notably India, have descended into hellish conditions in which vaccinations have not kept pace with the escalating rate of infections and deaths, and oxygen is in short supply? The Biden administration restricted <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> from India beginning Tuesday due to \u201cextraordinarily high\u201d caseloads and multiple variants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am afraid that our vision of life returning \u2018to normal\u2019 sometime this summer is slipping out of reach,\u201d said Dr. Andrew Pavia, the George and Esther Gross Presidential Professor at the University of Utah and head of the university hospital\u2019s pediatric infectious-diseases unit.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018The whole world changed in a couple of days. Getting back is going to be a whole lot more complicated.\u2019<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer at the University of Michigan<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       \u201cThat vision depends on reaching a really high level of population immunity so that the virus is not consistently spreading,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is likely that Israel will see the kind of suppression of COVID that we dream of. We probably will not unless we do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> As the U.S. continues to ramp up vaccinations to those who want to get them, the rollout has been much slower in Europe. Other countries, meanwhile, have barely gotten started. In the U.S., 32% of the total population is fully vaccinated and more than 44% have received at least one dose, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations\" class=\"icon none\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think back to a year ago, the whole world changed in a couple of days,\u201d said Dr. Preeti Malani, chief health officer in the divisions of infectious diseases and geriatric medicine at the University of Michigan and a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. \u201cGetting back is going to be a whole lot more complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With 32.5 million recorded infections, the U.S. has the world\u2019s highest total caseload of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease COVID-19, more than the official counts from India (20.3 million), Brazil (14.8 million) and France (5.7 million). The U.S. also has the most confirmed COVID-related fatalities (578,292).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coronavirus Update:<\/strong> India becomes second country with case tally above 20 million<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is a next phase in sight, if not an end in sight. COVID may not be completely gone, but it will be in the background,\u201d Malani added. \u201cBeing on a happy hour on Zoom<br \/>\n        ZM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211319643\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.89%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is not the same thing as being together on someone\u2019s patio, but it\u2019s OK short term. Humans need to be with humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like \u00a0Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser and the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Malani said that \u201cherd immunity\u201d is not a term she is entirely comfortable with. <\/p>\n<p>Once the first wave of vaccinations is complete, it will be hard to convince the holdouts to get the vaccine, she said \u2014 and progress won\u2019t happen evenly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus needs to be on preventing outbreaks and getting people vaccinated,\u201d she said. \u201cThere will be communities where the vaccination rates will be very high, but if you drive 50 miles in another direction, there will be very low vaccination rates. In my community [in Michigan], I anticipate that the summer and fall will look a lot more normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine expected to get FDA authorization for 12- to 15-year-olds next week<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_fifth_pandemic_in_100_years\"><\/span><strong>The fifth pandemic in 100 years<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Pavia is not so sure. \u201cI am less sanguine that we can open up in a gradual and thoughtful way, given the politics and fatigue,\u201d he said. And if we don\u2019t? \u201cMost states will have low to moderate ongoing transmission and death, with periodic spikes and superspreader events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome level of background transmission is probably inevitable, but the question is how much suffering are we going to have to put up with,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, people have different reactions to the perceived risk depending on the government\u2019s policies restricting or not restricting economic activity during COVID-19, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/system\/files\/working_papers\/w28741\/w28741.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">paper released this week<\/a> by a team of researchers at Stanford University; Duke University; and Westat Inc., a data-research firm in Rockville, Md. <\/p>\n<p>Consumers who believe that they face a higher risk of infection are more likely to report avoiding economic activities, and yet government rules restricting economic behavior reduce that relationship between perceived risk and protective behaviors, they found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018Most states will have low to moderate ongoing transmission and death, with periodic spikes and superspreader events.\u2019<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       As for a slow winding down where everyone is vaccinated and people act according to CDC guidance, \u201cit isn\u2019t going to happen,\u201d Dr. Gregory Poland, who studies the immunogenetics of vaccine response at the Mayo Clinic, told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThere is no nice, neat bow to tie this up. We have already rejected that,\u201d he said. \u201cOther countries have not. You can go to New Zealand and Australia: no masks, because they decided to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>- and evidence-based approach. We, for the most part, have not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People are complicated and unpredictable, Poland said. \u201cWe will have on-again, off-again outbreaks \u2014 just like we had after the holidays, despite the warnings,\u201d he added. \u201cWe are just coming out of the spring-break surge. The wise among us who are eligible have gotten vaccinated.\u201d Some people from marginalized or underserved communities have also faced structural barriers to vaccine access.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote a thesis on the plagues of the 1500s and 1600s in Britain,\u201d Poland said. \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reporter.lcms.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Plague-blogLW.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">Martin Luther<\/a> wrote a letter about how to manage the [bubonic] plague that was raging through England. He said, \u2018I will distance myself from people who have the sickness.\u2019 \u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were doing all the things that we are still arguing about 500 or 600 years later. George Bernard Shaw said the one thing we should learn from history is that we never learn from history. People engaging in political and economic manipulation prolonged this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had said in February [that] everyone should wear a mask, this would be done and over with,\u201d Poland added. \u201cBut 1 out of 575 of us is dead from a disease that we could have prevented. When you lay out the cold, hard facts, you throw up your hands and say this is irrational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the fifth pandemic in the last 100 years, Poland said, citing the 1918 flu pandemic, 1957 \u201cAsian flu,\u201d 1968 \u201cHong Kong flu,\u201d the AIDS pandemic and 2009 swine flu pandemic. And there were near-misses with Zika, Ebola and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS. <\/p>\n<p>Poland said writers like John Barry, author of <strong>\u201c<\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Great-Influenza-Deadliest-Plague-History\/dp\/B005APQFD6\/ref=pd_lpo_14_img_0\/140-1587549-6614152?_encoding=UTF8&amp;pd_rd_i=B005APQFD6&amp;pd_rd_r=8e87d511-339c-41e9-b99e-1c4ad3bb54f7&amp;pd_rd_w=YNkml&amp;pd_rd_wg=yaTjK&amp;pf_rd_p=a0d6e967-6561-454c-84f8-2ce2c92b79a6&amp;pf_rd_r=NX6NYK0Y7CNMWZTAYTWE&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=NX6NYK0Y7CNMWZTAYTWE\" class=\"icon none\">The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History<\/a>,\u201d did a forensic analysis of previous pandemics that the world could \u2014 and should \u2014 have learned. One of the many takeaways: During the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed an estimated 50 million people, wealthier people had a better chance of survival.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Pathologically_narcissistic_culture\"><\/span><strong>\u2018Pathologically narcissistic culture\u2019<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>In 2021, poorer countries are, for the most part, bearing the brunt. Until enough people are vaccinated, experts warn, countries will institute <em>ad hoc<\/em> isolationist policies to protect themselves from rising infections elsewhere. The latest such measure: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/australia-bans-arrivals-india-says-offenders-face-jail-fines-2021-05-01\/\" class=\"icon none\">Australia told citizens not to return from India<\/a>, or be prepared to face fines and possible jail time.<\/p>\n<p>Travel bans on citizens of certain other countries will likely persist. \u201cThere will always be risk of reintroductions from overseas until we have vaccine equity, but in a highly vaccinated population, those reintroductions would have a hard time spreading,\u201d Pavia said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try to be an optimist in spite of what we have seen in the last year,\u201d he added. \u201cI hope we can continue to make vaccines readily available to those for whom access is challenging, continue to answer people\u2019s fears and questions to increase confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7332744\/\" class=\"icon none\">politicization of the pandemic <\/a>and people\u2019s drastically different reactions to it across the country will be less easy to solve, Poland said. And how countries act in a global context is critical. \u201cTo be isolationist is wrong. Until the globe is vaccinated, none of us is safe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018People with zero knowledge of science feel very safe and comfortable sharing that ignorance with others.\u2019<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       On Monday, Moderna<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-6.68%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       said that it will supply 34 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/covax-facility\" class=\"icon none\">Covax initiative<\/a>,  an organization of Western governments to deliver vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income countries and economies. The Pfizer-BioNTech partnership<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.30%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-15.33%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and AstraZeneca<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200304487\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.43%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       had already signed up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> In the U.S., some states have dangled economic activity and social mobility as the carrots, and the vaccination rate as the stick, pledging to lift restrictions based on the amount of people who get the shot. With 55% of the population vaccinated, in-person work will be allowed in Michigan, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/coronavirus\/covid-19-vaccine\/covid-19-restrictions-will-lift-in-michigan-based-on-vaccination-rates-state-announces\" class=\"icon none\">and so on as more people get vaccinated.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you haven\u2019t accepted the pandemic as being a significant issue, and you don\u2019t want to be vaccinated, then maybe you haven\u2019t been taking significant precautions,\u201d Malani told MarketWatch. \u201cI feel like things will move in different directions across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some places, things already look pretty much normal. I\u2019m starting to see that in Ann Arbor, but in responsible ways. There\u2019s something comforting about that. Everything that\u2019s outdoors will go back to normal sooner. Indoors will be a slower process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is hopeful that people will learn from 2020. \u201cThe culture has shifted around if you are sick, you don\u2019t come to work or go to an event,\u201d Malani said. \u201cBefore COVID, people went to work sick. Some of those things will stay with us. Each day, week and month we learn more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh-school seniors are having graduation ceremonies, and they\u2019re having proms, but they\u2019re doing it outside and they\u2019re doing it after they\u2019ve been vaccinated,\u201d she added. \u201cCampuses are starting to look more like a normal campus, and that makes me very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poland feels less confident. He believes there needs to be a fundamental shift in American thinking and a rethinking of American exceptionalism for sustainable, long-term progress to happen. \u201cWe are a pathologically narcissistic culture. We are a \u2018me\u2019 not a \u2018we\u2019 culture. How did they manage to handle it so well in Asian countries? They are a \u2018we\u2019 society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blames \u201cscientific illiteracy and the false notion of democratization of expertise\u201d and said we should put scientific knowledge first. \u201cPeople with zero knowledge of science feel very safe and comfortable sharing that ignorance with others, and making decisions based on that ignorance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you reject science as a way of knowing, then you end up where we are,\u201d he added. \u201cWho are we as a culture that we were so prone to that? How is that possible? It\u2019s just a tragedy.
