With such a huge digital consumer market, these startups will have a major hand in shaping and growing the post-Covid economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, funding and opportunities are still given disproportionately to startups based in established markets. In fact, prior to COVID-19, there was a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/40d246e3-5cd3-40ae-bb23-fb640d3637a4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finance gap of $5 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between small and medium-sized businesses from emerging vs established markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to solve the world\u2019s biggest problems, we don\u2019t need solutions that are one size fits all. We need local innovation that will help solve local challenges and spur change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is, how can we shift the scales and help startups from emerging markets get the opportunities they need to thrive?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seedstars.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seedstars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Swiss-based private company is on a mission to impact people\u2019s lives in emerging markets through <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> and entrepreneurship. They\u2019ve developed a number of accelerators, growth programs, tech hubs, and investment opportunities for high-growth companies from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central and South Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seedstarsworld.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seedstars World Competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the moment that brings together the top startups from across their global network together for the chance to win an investment of $500k. Started in 2013, with the help of their partners <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.invest-vaud.ch\/\">the Canton of VAUD<\/a>, HEG-FR: The School Of Management Fribourg, Mada, and Presence Switzerland, Seedstars World has since become the largest startup competition in emerging markets, spanning across 90 countries. And this year they\u2019re teaming up with TNW to bring it to an even wider audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spoke with the five finalists to find out what they believe will be the most important areas to focus on when shaping the post-Covid world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_data_collection\"><\/span><b>Understanding data collection<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions around the ethics of data collection and data privacy have been widespread across the internet. But it needs to be about more than just making sense of data; we must also ensure collection procedures match with existing technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luis Santiago, CEO of Venezuela-based <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pegasi.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEGASI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes we would have been better equipped to handle this pandemic if healthcare information wasn\u2019t collected in, \u201cunstructured and analogical formats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEGASI makes healthcare information accessible, clear, and useful for patients, physicians, and service providers in the developing world. Their aim is to build:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A world with disseminate use of electronic health records (EHRs) and personal health records (PHRs), a strong privacy policy that details meaningful information sharing, and support for public-private partnerships that foster digital transformation in the Healthcare sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Santiago, becoming a finalist in Seedstars\u2019 competition will help significantly. \u201cThese are typically very tough industries and regions in which to gain traction and attract the attention of investors. Having a partner that directs the spotlight in a way in which we stand the chance to create a positive change is an extremely valuable asset for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Decreasing_wealth_inequality\"><\/span><b>Decreasing wealth inequality<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another issue that the pandemic has shined a light on? The ever-growing wealth inequality gap. While the wealthy were not heavily impacted (some even <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/01\/the-covid-recession-brought-extreme-inequality-in-2020.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so many others struggled to meet their living expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This problem is one that Uzbek startup <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/imaninvest.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMAN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hopes to fix: \u201cOur vision is to use the power of technology to connect investors with borrowers at the point of sale using the principles of Islamic finance,\u201d says CFO and founder Mark Zubov. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way, any retail investor on the planet can grow his or her wealth in an ethical way while easing access to honest and transparent financing for consumers in frontier markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With IMAN\u2019s incorporation of P2P lending, the startup is able to create investment products that manage to be both more accessible for investors and more affordable for borrowers, contributing to a more equitable financial system.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though access to capital is always an obstacle, Zubov says, \u201cEvents like the Seedstars World Competition give opportunities to startups from anywhere in the world to pitch their projects, network with fellow entrepreneurs, and learn from mentors that are the best in what they do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moving_to_a_more_digital_world\"><\/span><b>Moving to a more digital world<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s one thing the past year has shown us, it\u2019s that most services can be provided digitally. This is definitely true for the financial services industry. Unfortunately, there are plenty of institutions that were simply not prepared to go digital or only scratched the surface of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital transformation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heavily impacting their businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial industry doesn\u2019t have to be this way though, which is why decentralized finance-based transactions dominated the realm and are now challenging the entire future of the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaysia\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finology.com.my\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a startup that enables seamless access to financial products via their technology and digital distribution channels. As the financial services industry moves forward digitally, it\u2019s important for startups like Finology to get themselves in front of the public: \u201cWhere there is attention, there are opportunities,\u201d says co-founder Jared Lim, \u201cand any such opportunities can be just the propellant to change the trajectory of a company for good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Lim believes there\u2019s still hope for the industry: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FSIs can still remain relevant if they leverage their advantages as the incumbents while also updating their IT infrastructure and processes to be more digitally friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finology is pushing this, as it enables seamless access to financial products everywhere using end-to-end digital broking technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Building_resilience\"><\/span><b>Building resilience<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA resilient economy is better able to support households and businesses in a crisis,\u201d says Ladda\u2019s Olaseinde. Unfortunately, some emerging markets lacked supportive operating environments. This is true for Nigeria, where there is a high dependence on commodity exports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One key in building resiliency as a startup is staying sustainable. Olaseinde says Ladda tries \u201cto keep costs under control to sustain a good cash flow position and strong buffers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/getladda.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ladda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides cheap, convenient access to investment opportunities for retail investors in Nigeria. Founder Oluwatosin Olaseinde knows the startup struggle:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startups in emerging markets still face huge funding gaps compared to their peers in advanced markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he noted that the Seedstars World Competition, \u201cprovides direct and indirect funding opportunities,\u201d to all competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recognizing_current_limitations\"><\/span><b>Recognizing current limitations<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis pandemic came as a wake-up call to all who use that quote, \u2018E-commerce is the future,\u2019\u201d says Kais Khadhraoui, CEO and founder of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fulfillmentbridge.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulfillment Bridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTo them, we say it was the future, but 20 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, the pandemic has led to an increase in online business, but that doesn\u2019t mean e-commerce is perfect. The current infrastructure has some major limitations and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancesmb.com\/disadvantages-of-e-commerce-1141571\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disadvantages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in emerging markets like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/africa-emerging-ecommerce-market-many-challenges\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Middle East, regions that have been <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/retail\/our-insights\/how-middle-east-and-africa-retailers-can-accelerate-e-commerce-imperatives-for-now-and-the-next-normal#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to adapt to internet commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where a startup like Tunisia\u2019s Fulfillment Bridge comes in. This cloud-based global e-commerce logistics platform offers warehousing in four continents, fulfillment, shipping, return management, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khadhraoui says the past year has helped the startup shape both its vision and mission. As they redefine e-commerce with a focus in Africa and the Middle East, Fulfillment Bridge hopes to, \u201cbuild the infrastructure to promote e-commerce transactions from, to, and within the region.\u201d As Khadhraoui says,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is in a marathon to adopt the e-commerce infrastructure.
