New South Wales\u00a0Transport Minister Andrew Constance declared his support of the EV transition, stating that the Australian government should provide bigger incentives, the Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister proposed\u00a0several measures, including\u00a0subsidizing car parks with charging stations, waiving stamp duty, and giving access to transit lanes for drivers of electric cars.<\/p>\n

He also added that the government needs to pick a \u201cdrop dead\u201d date for the ban on petrol and diesel vehicle sales.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has declared his intention to impose EV road tax<\/a> in Victoria by July, Constance said that the government will not app<\/a>ly such a levy\u00a0<\/span>until electric vehicles make up 40 to 50% of the car market.<\/p>\n

When that is the case, NSW will consider solutions to compensate for the\u00a0tax revenue lost from a drop in fuel excise. Its approach will be distinctly different from the new Victorian system that will tax EVs at 2.5 cents ($1.9 cents) per kilometer.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the government rolls out an electric vehicle tax too soon, \u201cWhat we will do is make ourselves the laughing stock of the world.\u00a0<\/span>The rest of the world will have moved to full manufacturing of electric vehicles and here we are sort of struggling,\u201d Mr Constance remarked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
