“#LeBron James expresses regret over Ma\u2019Khia Bryant tweet<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

LeBron James has expressed regret for his inflammatory tweet about the Ohio cop who fatally shot 16-year-old Ma\u2019Khia Bryant \u2013 saying he \u201cfueled the wrong conversation\u201d about the teen.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar said on Twitter<\/a> this week that he owes \u201cit to her and this movement to change\u201d the conversation.<\/p>\n

James also thanked Vox writer Fabiola Cineas \u201cfor educating us about Ma\u2019Khia and her story and why this needs to be about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added a link to Cineas\u2019 piece<\/a> \u2014 titled \u201cWhy they\u2019re not saying Ma\u2019Khia Bryant\u2019s name\u201d \u2014 in which she wrote that \u201cviewers of various races and political affiliations\u201d decided that Bryant was the knife-wielding \u201caggressor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cries for justice that app<\/a>lied to George Floyd did not ring out as loudly for Bryant,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven after it was discovered that Bryant was living in foster care, that she was in the middle of a fight with older women when police arrived, and that she was allegedly the one who summoned the police for help, people \u2014 some of the\u00a0same people\u00a0who called for justice\u00a0in Floyd\u2019s case \u2014 used police talking points to justify the four bullets that Reardon unloaded into Bryant\u2019s chest,\u201d Cineas continued.<\/p>\n

She also cited Treva Lindsey, a professor of African American women\u2019s history at Ohio State University, who said there are people who won\u2019t see the teen as a victim but as someone who \u201cbrought this on herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd even for those who do see her as a victim, they\u2019ll still victim-blame, erasing the systemic oppression \u2014 including that Black children are\u00a0far more likely\u00a0<\/a>to be in foster care than their white counterparts, and kids in foster care are often exposed to\u00a0high levels of violence<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that brought her to being killed at the hands of the police,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

James sparked controversy April 21\u00a0when he tweeted a picture\u00a0of Columbus Police Officer Nicholas Reardon along with the ominous-sounding caption, \u201cYOU\u2019RE NEXT.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later\u00a0deleted the tweet\u00a0amid a backlash, saying he took it down because it was \u201cbeing used to create more hate.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
