\n Defense Secretary Mark Esper says he was not briefed on alleged Russian \u201cbounties\u201d to kill US troops in Afghanistan \u2014 and that he would have been if there was credible intelligence.<\/p>\n

Esper\u2019s under-oath testimony Thursday to the House Armed Services Committee follows a bombshell report last month that claimed President Trump was briefed on Russian bounties and didn\u2019t act.<\/p>\n

Trump denies he was briefed and denounced the report as \u201canother made up by Fake News<\/a> tale that is told only to damage me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Esper\u2019s testimony implicitly supports Trump\u2019s version of events.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongressman, to the best of my recollection I have not received a briefing that included the word bounty,\u201d Esper testified.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was a credible report \u2014 that\u2019s important, a credible corroborated report that used those words, certainly, it would have been brought to my attention by the chain of command,\u201d Esper added.<\/p>\n

Republican Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio elicited the response, telling Esper that committee members already knew \u201cthe answer\u201d to whether Esper was briefed on the alleged Russian bounties before the public reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings that haven\u2019t happ<\/a>ened are not classified,\u201d Turner said, asking Esper point-blank whether he was briefed about Russian bounties in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass.), however, had Esper concede that he did learn about alleged Russian \u201cpayments,\u201d just not \u201cbounties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can acknowledge, since you acknowledged there was no bounties, that indeed there were reports that mentioned payments? Is that correct?\u201d Keating pressed. \u201cCongressman, that\u2019s correct,\u201d Esper replied.<\/p>\n

Esper said that in February he read about Russian payments \u201cwhen it came out in an intelligence piece of paper,\u201d but that two US general<\/a>s in Afghanistan pursued the tip and \u201cneither thought the reports were credible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe illegal leaks are terrible, they\u2019re happening across the government, particularly in the Defense Department,\u201d Esper said. \u201cIt jeopardizes our troops, and it is just damaging to our government and our relationships with our allies and partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said last week that the intelligence on \u201cbounties\u201d was unconfirmed, and may never be confirmed due to the reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not be able to get \u2014 very likely not be able to get a consensus on this intelligence because of what was leaked to the New York Times,\u201d McEnany said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
