{"id":242817,"date":"2021-05-05T19:41:48","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T16:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/a-degree-hotter-than-two-decades-ago-2\/"},"modified":"2021-05-05T19:41:48","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T16:41:48","slug":"a-degree-hotter-than-two-decades-ago-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/a-degree-hotter-than-two-decades-ago-2\/","title":{"rendered":"#A degree hotter than two decades ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#A degree hotter than two decades ago<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>America\u2019s new normal temperature is a degree hotter than it was just two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>The new United States normal is not just hotter, but wetter in the eastern and central parts of the nation and considerably drier in the West than just a decade earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists calculate\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/products\/us-climate-normals\">climate normals<\/a>\u00a0based on 30 years of data to limit the random swings of daily weather. It\u2019s a standard set by the World Meteorological Organization. Every 10 years, NOAA\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/briefings\/20210420.pdf\">updates normal\u00a0<\/a>for the country as a whole, states and cities \u2014 by year, month and season.<\/p>\n<p>For the entire nation, the yearly normal temperature is now 11.8 degrees Celsius based on weather station data from 1991 to 2020, nearly half a degree warmer than a decade ago. Twenty years ago, normal was 52.3 degrees based on data from 1971 to 2000. Seattle, Atlanta, Boston and Phoenix had their normal annual temperature rise by at least half a degree in the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>Charlottesville, Virginia, saw the biggest jump in normal temperatures among 739 major weather stations. Other large changes were in California, Texas, Virginia, Indiana, Arizona, Oregon, Arkansas, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina and Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>New normals are warmer because the burning of fossil fuels is making\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-global-temperature-record-b4f5556cbdb2b0b4de6c86d52642db4e\">the last decade<\/a>\u00a0\u201ca much hotter time period for much of the globe than the decades\u201d before, said Cornell University climate scientist Natalie Mahowald.<\/p>\n<p>For Phoenix, the biggest change in normal came in precipitation. The normal annual rainfall for Phoenix dropped 10 percent down to 7.2 inches. Rainfall in Los Angeles dropped 4.6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Asheville saw a nearly 9 percent increase in rainfall, while New York City\u2019s rainfall rose 6 percent. Adjusting normal every 10 years \u201cperverts the meaning of \u2018normal\u2019 and \u2018normalizes\u2019 away climate change,\u201d he said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina\u2019s state climatologist Kathie Dello said, \u201cIt seems odd to still call them normals because 1991-2020 was anything but normal climate-wise.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
