SEATTLE, May 5 \u2013\u00a0Blue\u00a0Origin, billionaire Jeff Bezos\u2019 rocket company, is poised to open up\u00a0ticket\u00a0sales\u00a0on\u00a0Wednesday\u00a0for suborbital sightseeing trips on its New Shepard\u00a0spacecraft, a landmark moment as US firms strive toward a new era of private commercial\u00a0space\u00a0travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Blue\u00a0Origin\u00a0is expected to announce details on how to purchase a seat, the timing of the first flight and the cost for a\u00a0ticket, which has been a carefully guarded secret inside\u00a0Blue\u00a0for years.<\/p>\n

Reuters reported in 2018 that\u00a0Blue\u00a0was planning to charge passengers at least $200,000 for the ride, based on an app<\/a>raisal of rival plans from billionaire Richard Branson\u2019s Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc and other considerations, though its thinking may have changed.<\/p>\n

Blue\u00a0Origin\u00a0teased last week that it would soon\u00a0begin\u00a0selling\u00a0tickets, following years of testing and development work that has included delays.<\/p>\n

Blue\u2019s New Shepard rocket-and-capsule combo is designed to autonomously fly six passengers more than 62 miles above Earth into suborbital\u00a0space, high enough to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and see the curvature of the planet before the pressurized capsule returns to earth under parachutes.<\/p>\n

The capsule features six observation windows\u00a0Blue\u00a0Origin\u00a0says are nearly three times as tall as those on a Boeing Co 747 jetliner.<\/p>\n

While celebrities and the uber-rich appear to be a core market for\u00a0space\u00a0tourist jaunts, at least initially, industry sources expect\u00a0Blue\u00a0to include some philanthropic component to its\u00a0ticket\u00a0strategy.<\/p>\n

A college science<\/a> professor and an aerospace\u00a0data analyst are among a four-member crew for a launch into orbit planned later this year by Elon Musk\u2019s\u00a0SpaceX, part of a charity drive billed as the first all-civilian\u00a0spaceflight in history.<\/p>\n

Virgin Galactic also aims to fly private customers in early 2022, after a first flight with Branson on board later this year.<\/p>\n

Its zero-gravity experience is anchored by its\u00a0SpaceShipTwo plane and the company has ambitious plans to offer point-to-point travel between far-flung cities at near-space\u00a0altitudes.<\/p>\n

Virgin says it will charge more than $250,000 for new reservations but has not announced final pricing.\u00a0Sales\u00a0will reopen following Branson\u2019s flight.<\/p>\n

In 2018, one\u00a0Blue\u00a0Origin\u00a0employee with first-hand knowledge of the pricing plan said the company will start selling\u00a0tickets in the range of about $200,000 to $300,000. A second employee said\u00a0tickets would cost a minimum of $200,000.<\/p>\n

Blue\u00a0Origin\u2019s announcement will provide Bezos, who founded Amazon.com Inc, sorely needed momentum after\u00a0Blue\u00a0Origin\u00a0lost out to\u00a0SpaceX on a $2.9 billion contract under NASA\u2019s high-profile program to return Americans to the moon in coming years.<\/p>\n

However, NASA has told\u00a0SpaceX to halt development work specifically related to the moon program contract pending the outcome of protests by\u00a0Blue\u00a0and rival Dynetics at the US Government Accountability Office.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
