The\u00a0Red Sonja<\/em> <\/strong>movie that\u2019s been kicking around Hollywood for several years now, has found its lead.\u00a0Hannah John-Kamen<\/strong>, who played Ghost in\u00a0Ant-Man and the Wasp<\/em>, and whose credits include\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em>,\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em>, and the upcoming\u00a0Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City<\/em>, will play the titular character, with\u00a0Joey Soloway<\/strong> directing a script<\/a> co-written with Tasha Huo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into the long, complicated history of the\u00a0Red Sonja<\/em> movie, shall we?\u00a0In 2008, Douglas Aarniokoski\u00a0was hired to direct a\u00a0Red Sonja<\/em>\u00a0movie, with Robert Rodriguez producing and Rose McGowan set to star. That version of the film never came together, but by 2011,\u00a0Megan Fox was soon\u00a0in the running\u00a0to star. <\/em>Again, things fell through, but Hollywood never gives up. Soon,\u00a0Con Air<\/em>\u00a0director\u00a0Simon West\u00a0was mentioned as a potential new director for the project, with\u00a0Amber Heard\u00a0as the star.
\nCan you guess what happened next? I bet you can. That version of\u00a0Red Sonja<\/em> also never happened, and in 2015,\u00a0Christopher Cosmos\u00a0was\u00a0hired\u00a0to write a new script. That script was nixed in 2018 for one by Ashley Edward Miller, who wrote\u00a0X-Men: First<\/em>\u00a0Class<\/em>. Later in 2018, Bryan Singer was announced to direct. But almost as soon as Singer\u2019s involvement was announced there was an outcry due to allegations that had been following the filmmaker for years. Those allegations took center stage in 2019 when\u00a0The Atlantic<\/a>\u00a0published an article in which several people accused Singer of sexual misconduct. The stories stretched back nearly 20 years, and in the wake of the article,\u00a0Red Sonja<\/em> was put on\u00a0hold. Later that same year it was\u00a0announced\u00a0that Singer was gone and Joey Soloway would now direct.<\/p>\n

Now here we are, up to date! The film is seemingly, finally where it needs to be, pre-production-wise. Soloway is still directing, and also handling the script with Tasha Huo. And THR<\/a> is reporting that\u00a0Hannah John-Kamen will play Red Sonja herself. \u201cHannah is a very talented actress who we\u2019ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja,\u201d said Soloway. \u201cHer range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn\u2019t be more excited to embark on this journey together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Sonja<\/em> is based on the character created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics\u2019\u00a0Conan the Barbarian<\/em>\u00a0in the 1970s. She\u2019s a sword-wielding ass-kicker, and John-Kamen will surely get to do a lot of cool fighting throughout the film. Whether or not the end result will be worth all the trouble and fits and starts the project has gone through over the years remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
