US Rep. Tom Suozzi is demanding answers in the wake of the Department of Education\u2019s abrupt move to scrap Columbus Day as a school holiday.<\/p>\n

In a letter issued to city Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter late Tuesday, Suozzi (D-Nassau) expressed his opposition to the decision to, at first change the holiday to \u201cIndigenous Peoples\u2019 Day\u201d and later add \u201cItalian Heritage Day\u201d to the October holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not support the removal or replacement of Columbus Day,\u201d Suozzi wrote, while demanding \u201cinformation as to the process used to arrive at this decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The school-year calendar posted online early Tuesday initially omitted any mention of Italian heritage, simply referring to the Oct. 11 holiday as \u201cIndigenous Peoples\u2019 Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suozzi, whose father came from Italy, told The Post the DOE\u2019s after-the-fact nod to \u201cItalian heritage\u201d \u2014 under pressure from Mayor Bill de Blasio, who nevertheless supports the push to cancel Columbus, was \u201cnot good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what happ<\/a>ened here. I just know that I was surprised, as were many other people,\u201d Suozzi said Wednesday. \u201cThis should not be something that should come as a surprise to people. People\u00a0should have the opportunity to make their points.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters Wednesday morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio claimed neither he nor Ross Porter had been informed of the plans to change the holiday \u2014 but insisted the joint celebration of Italian and Native American heritage was \u201cright and appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spoke about it and we both agreed this was not the right way to handle\u00a0things,\u201d Hizzoner said. \u201cThe original idea wasn\u2019t sufficient and we addressed that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think saying, it\u2019s a day to honor Italian American heritage is absolutely right and appropriate, and that\u2019s the way to talk about it and think about it,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think also saying, as has been done in many parts of the country, it\u2019s a day to think about history and honor indigenous people as well \u2014 I agree with that too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dozens of cities and jurisdictions across the US have ditched Columbus Day to\u00a0honor Native Americans\u00a0instead\u00a0\u2014 following the lead of ultra-liberal Berkeley, Calif., which began observing the latter holiday in 1992.<\/p>\n

De Blasio has been embroiled in Columbus controversy since at least 2018, when he said the Midtown statue of the famed explorer could be torn down by his \u201cmonuments commission.\u201d The statue still stands three years later. <\/p>\n

The commission ultimately recommended creating explanatory plaques for the Columbus statue and other monuments \u2014 an effort de Blasio admitted had stalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously the last year plus everything\u2019s been thrown off by the pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to follow through on that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
