href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/chinese-rocket-uncontrolled-reentry-last-time\">Long March 5B rocket\u2019s core stage<\/a>\u00a0is set to make an\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/chinese-rocket-to-make-uncontrolled-reentry-unclear-where-debris-will-hit-report\">uncontrolled reentry<\/a>\u00a0into\u00a0Earth\u2019s\u00a0atmosphere in the next few days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 100-foot-long object is\u00a0orbiting\u00a0the blue marble every 90 minutes, passing north of\u00a0New York\u00a0and Beijing and as far south as\u00a0Chile\u00a0and\u00a0New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0the main stage released the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/world-news-china-business-mars-science-2c4d9292eb82fe11eafef6e9cd1c19b4\">Tianhe, or \u201cHeavenly Harmony,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0module \u2013\u00a0the makings of the country\u2019s\u00a0first permanent\u00a0space station\u00a0\u2013\u00a0shortly after the eight-minute mark of the mission,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/100-foot-tall-booster-from-chinese-rocket-will-likely-m-1846797068\">Gizmodo reported<\/a>\u00a0that the core stage stayed in\u00a0space\u00a0and did not perform a controlled deorbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although rocket manufacturers typically take precautionary measures to avoid falling rocket debris,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/science\/long-march-5b-uncontrolled-reentry\">Inverse says<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Long March 5B rocket stage is built without a steering\u00a0booster,\u00a0stabilization system and\u00a0restartable engine.<\/p>\n<p>Space debris hurtling back toward\u00a0Earth is\u00a0a fairly common occurrence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule had a close encounter with some orbiting junk last month, though it turned out there was no real threat.<\/p>\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s (NOAA)\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/content\/does-space-junk-fall-sky\">National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS)\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0that, on average, between 200 and 400 tracked objects enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere annually.<\/p>\n<p>Most pieces of space debris \u2013\u00a0continuously amassing since the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/sputnik-moments-trio-of-spaceflight-events-shook-us-in-1957\">satellite Sputnik 1<\/a>\u00a0escaped Earth\u2019s gravitational pull on Oct. 4, 1957 \u2013\u00a0burn up in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere on their descent.<\/p>\n<p>Of the millions of pieces of space debris estimated to be orbiting the planet, roughly 30,000 are larger than a softball and only around 1,000 are actual\u00a0spacecraft, NESDIS reports.<\/p>\n<p>The objects are monitored by the US military\u2019s Space Surveillance Network (SSN) and NASA\u2019s\u00a0Orbital Debris Program Office using\u00a0radar, telescopes and other space-based systems.<\/p>\n<p>Even the smallest debris orbits at a\u00a0high velocity, which can also\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/space-debris\">be harmful to satellites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/space-junk\">National Geographic reports<\/a>\u00a0that most\u00a0space junk is in lower Earth orbit, around 1,250 miles above the\u00a0planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12894-space-debris-nasa-frequently-asked-questions.html\">Space.com says<\/a>\u00a0that how long a piece of space debris takes to fall back to Earth depends on its altitude and that debris left in orbits below 370 miles normally fall back to Earth within a period of several years.<\/p>\n<p>Components that survive the fall are likely to hit bodies of water, as Earth\u2019s\u00a0oceans\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-giant-piece-of-space-junk-is-hurtling-towards-earth-heres-how-worried-you-should-be-160254\">cover 70 percent of the planet\u2019s surface<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data recorded over a period of more than 50 years shows an average of one piece of debris fell back to Earth each day, though there have been\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/woman-hit-by-space-junk-lives-to-tell-the-tale\">no confirmed deaths or serious injuries<\/a>\u00a0from people being hit by space debris.<\/p>\n<p>However, space debris can, of course, cause some damage depending on where it lands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1979,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/skylab-space-station-fall-40-years.html\">NASA\u2019s almost 100-ton\u00a0Skylab<\/a>\u00a0fell on a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-12\/four-decades-on-from-skylabs-descent-from-space\/11249626\">small Australian town<\/a>,\u00a0the\u00a0Soviet Union\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1991\/02\/07\/world\/salyut-7-soviet-station-in-space-falls-to-earth-after-9-year-orbit.html\">43-ton Salyut-7 space station<\/a>\u00a0landed in Argentina in 1991 and in May of last year another China\u00a0Long March 5B rocket released debris over\u00a0Africa\u2019s Ivory Coast\u00a0after\u00a0spending a week in low
