“#Ingenuity Mars helicopter sets stage for space flight on other worlds, NASA says<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

NASA\u00a0experts discussed a new era in\u00a0space\u00a0exploration Monday following the success of space\u00a0flights by the\u00a0Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which could set the stage for flight in other worlds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a live discussion\u00a0streamed on YouTube<\/a> from the\u00a0Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern\u00a0California, Ingenuity pilot Johnny Lam said the helicopter can get into areas that other space robots or devices can\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think with the success of Ingenuity, we basically unlocked an aerial dimension to exploration,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can kind of reach some hard-to-reach areas, we can provide images, reconnaissance\u2026 the best path to traverse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEventually all these things can also help with human exploration on Mars or\u00a0other planets,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The space agency engineered its fourth Ingenuity flight on Mars last week. The four-pound spacecraft\u00a0flew 436 feet south to collect aerial imagery of a\u00a0possible new landing zone.<\/p>\n

The next flight would be a one-way trip<\/a> to a new landing site. The helicopter will eventually try to fly along with the Preservance Rover to test how it works as a scout.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mission will provide inspiration,\u201d said Nishant Mehta, deputy lead for NASA\u2019s Dragonfly mobility system, from Maryland.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019ll aspire future ideas for planetary exploration and certainly push our boundaries even further.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dragonfly is the NASA mission to deliver rotorcraft to Titan, Saturn\u2019s moon, to look for signs of life. Its launch is scheduled for 2027. The machine is equipped with cameras.<\/p>\n

The navigation cameras will collect one image per second, which is not \u201cvery often,\u201d Mehta said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be spending a lot of time optimizing what data\u00a0we want to bring down, working with the scientists to figure out what\u2019s most interesting,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ingenuity has two cameras but no video capability, Lam said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The biggest challenge for Ingenuity is the takeoff and landing, he added. To get it off the ground, a large amount of thrust is app<\/a>lied to get Ingenuity to the desired altitude.\u00a0For landing, the helicopter descends at 1 meter per second, he said.<\/p>\n

Nishant said one of the greatest challenges for the Dragonfly Mission will be the temperature on the surface of Titan, which can drop to minus\u00a0300 degrees, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDesigning a lander that can survive those temperatures and operate in those\u00a0temperatures is a challenge,\u201d he said.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
