[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Chicago P.D.<\/em><\/a> Season 8 Episode 13 \u201cTrouble Dolls.\u201d]<\/strong><\/p>\n

Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati<\/a>) may sleep better at night now knowing that she\u2019s made a necessary decision in Makayla\u2019s (Ramona Edith Williams) adoption: naming her ex-fianc\u00e9, Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger<\/a>), as guardian.<\/p>\n

This comes after, in the May 5 episode of Chicago P.D.<\/em>, Burgess is almost shot on the job while chasing a suspect \u2014 the bullet goes through her jacket but doesn\u2019t hit her \u2014 and Makayla\u2019s having trouble sleeping.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a little confused. You remember what\u2019s been going on, the questions you\u2019ve had about me? Things haven\u2019t been too good between us,\u201d Ruzek points out when she asks. (There\u2019s been tension since she questioned his actions while chasing down the man threatening his father\u2019s life in the March 31 episode.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were supposed to have a baby together, dummy,\u201d Burgess reminds him. (She lost the baby after getting injured on the job in Season 7.) \u201cBecause we\u2019re family. Because you and I are a lot of things including pretty screwed up. Who knows if we\u2019ll ever really get our act together? But her last name\u2019s Burgess now, Adam, and one thing that we can be is this whole big round thing that can somehow protect her, even if Makayla doesn\u2019t know it exists, and I need that. It\u2019s the only way that I can do this \u2014 be a good mom and be the kind of cop that I need to be. I need it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where do they go from there after he agrees? And what\u2019s coming up in the May 26 finale? TV Insider turned to Squerciati for answers.<\/p>\n

That handshake between Kim and Adam is both odd and fitting, given their history and what they\u2019re talking about, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marina Squerciati: <\/strong>Yeah. Actually, that was Patty\u2019s idea, to do the handshake. The scene sort of ended. Some directors say cut right away. Some let the air breathe. So we\u2019re standing there awkwardly. He asks, \u201cSo what do we do now shake?\u201d And I say, \u201cOK.\u201d It kind of [came out] of this awkward moment between the two characters. I think it\u2019s kind of perfect. They smile. They seem to be in a good space, but they\u2019re not ready to physically have contact.<\/p>\n

Does adding this new layer to their relationship mean there\u2019s hope for them? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I think there\u2019s always hope for them. They\u2019re the eternal couple. They probably will get married in Season 15, but who knows? They can\u2019t seem to get their stuff together.<\/p>\n

That bullet hole in her jacket is the last shot of the episode. Talk about Kim\u2019s decision to keep it? Is it a reminder? <\/strong><\/p>\n

To sort of make that make sense for me as an actor, it was just that she didn\u2019t have time to go buy a new jacket. She shouldn\u2019t be wearing [it], especially [since] she doesn\u2019t want Makayla to see it, but this takes place in the course of two days. And as a mom, even if you ordered it on Amazon, you can\u2019t get a new jacket in time. I don\u2019t have time. I have a full-time job. I\u2019m trying to spend time with my child. It\u2019s even highlighting more of the realities of how little time you have for yourself as a working mom.<\/p>\n

She also freezes in the field, which she admits to [Desk Sergeant Trudy] Platt [Amy Morton]. And Platt suggests that naming a guardian might give Kim peace of mind. Does it? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Maybe? I think it will always affect her. But I think [Platt\u2019s] right. Naming a guardian will give her at least the peace of mind in that she won\u2019t be thinking about it constantly when she\u2019s on the job, which is I think what she needs in order to be a cop. That\u2019s what she says: \u201cI need this to be a good mom and be the kind of cop I need to be.\u201d That\u2019s what it is. And I think that part of it in her brain is put away when she names Ruzek as the guardian.<\/p>\n

Kim and Makayla are taking small steps \u2014 Kim waiting to see what Makayla needs when she locks herself in the closet at school, the trouble dolls for the nightmares\u2026 What\u2019s next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s an odd analogy to say because it\u2019s a mother and child, but it\u2019s like dating or maybe an arranged marriage. They\u2019re not totally a family yet they\u2019re learning how to be a family. There are some hiccups along the way. I liked that Makayla\u2019s character had said, \u201cI want my mom,\u201d and that we recognize that [Kim] and Makayla are not a perfect relationship. It\u2019s not just, \u201cOh, your life is now perfect.\u201d She\u2019s had a lot of trauma. I\u2019m not her mom and we\u2019re getting used to each other.<\/p>\n

What else can you tease about this season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re coming up to the season finale, which is going to be a nightmare of epic proportions for everybody on the show. It is just a crazy, crazy, explosive season finale that is going to be different. The show will be quite different next season.<\/p>\n

The first part features Nicole Ari Parker\u2019s<\/a> character [Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller] and the second part features [Sergeant Hank] Voight [Jason Beghe<\/a>] a little bit more. It\u2019s a dance between reform and old Voight and who\u2019s going to win. It\u2019s crazy. It\u2019s wonderful. Everyone sort of gets beaten up, so to speak, on the last episode. Everyone will come out a little different.<\/p>\n
