\u201cElon Musk is too funny for \u2018Saturday Night Live,\u2019 \u201d snarks Damian Reilly at Spectator USA<\/a>, but \u201cI hope he kills it\u201d with a \u201cbrutal\u201d \u201ccomedic assault on political correctness.\u201d The left insists \u201cMusk, a billionaire who happ<\/a>ens to be popular among people on the right, should not have been asked to host\u201d this weekend. The \u201cclearly nervous\u201d producers told the cast they could skip \u201cwork on the episode, in case contact with a successful plutocrat might give the woke darlings anxiety issues.\u201d But only \u201ccomedia<\/a>ns free of fear of being canceled\u201d are funny \u2014 which is why \u201cSNL\u201d hasn\u2019t been in years. If the Tesla founder, \u201chaving conquered space travel<\/a>, cryptocurrency, electric vehicles and capitalism,\u201d decides \u201cto conquer comedy, I wouldn\u2019t bet against him.\u201d Would you rather have as Earth\u2019s richest man \u201ca terminally bland corporate droid, a terrifying Middle Eastern dictator or a man who made the nose cone of his Starship rocket more pointy after watching Sacha Baron Cohen\u2019s \u2018The Dictator\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: \u2018Equity\u2019 Attack on Advanced Math<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since its \u201coverriding concern is inequity,\u201d the California Department of Education has gone to war on accelerated math classes; it will \u201cprohibit any sorting until high school, keeping gifted kids in the same classrooms as their less mathematically inclined peers until at least grade nine,\u201d laments Reason\u2019s Robby Soave<\/a>. The idea is that \u201cmath is really about language and culture and social justice, and no one is naturally better at it than anyone else\u201d; in reality, math is \u201ccertainly not something that all kids are equally capable of learning and enjoying.\u201d California is \u201csabotaging its brightest students.\u201d<\/p>\n

US Steel just canceled a $1.5 billion plan to make lightweight steel for vehicles in Braddock, Pa., reports Salena Zito at the Washington Examiner<\/a>. Lost is the promise of \u201ccleaner air\u201d and more than 1,000 \u201cgood-paying jobs.\u201d The company blamed a dragged-out delay from county officials and its own new focus on \u201csustainability.\u201d The work will now likely go \u201csomeplace where bureaucrats are less beholden (or aligned with) environmentalists.\u201d President Biden vows \u201cto protect union jobs and bring back manufacturing,\u201d as he claims a \u201cdecarbonizing economy will create millions of jobs. Here, however, it meant zero jobs created and perhaps many destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Analyst: Two Bellwether Pennsylvania Votes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUrban progressivism is on the ballot\u201d in the May 18 primaries in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Charles F. McElwee relates at RealClearPolitics<\/a>. Two-term Pittsburgh Mayor \u201cBill Peduto could lose reelection for not going far enough as a self-described progressive \u2014 particularly on public-safety issues,\u201d while Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner \u201cmay lose a second term for going too far as a progressive prosecutor.\u201d Backed by Democratic Socialists and the local SEIU, lead Peduto challenger Ed Gainey would \u201credirect\u201d funding from police, while the mayor says most cops are \u201cgood people\u201d and opposes (more) defunding. In Philly, \u201cvoters \u2014 especially in minority neighborhoods \u2014 are moving against Krasner, who blames societal forces for rising crime\u201d and has softened prosecutions from shoplifting to gun crimes. Bronx-born challenger Carlos Vega wants \u201creform that doesn\u2019t come at the expense of our safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Economist: The Moral Case for Capitalism<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Modern Age, economist Alexander William Salter praises<\/a> Donald Devine\u2019s new book \u201cThe Enduring Tension: Capitalism and the Moral Order\u201d as a \u201cbroad social-philosophical work that reevaluates the sources of capitalism\u2019s legitimacy.\u201d Devine notes that markets have ethical prerequisites, including \u201crespect for the human individual,\u201d \u201cprohibitions on coercion, theft and fraud\u201d and a \u201cpositive attitude toward work.\u201d But, notes Salter, today\u2019s \u201ccentralized political arrangements\u201d attack all of that. Devine shows \u201cthe fault lines\u201d in \u201cthe ongoing dispute between conservatives,\u201d as some have a new \u201coptimism\u201d for \u201cusing state power to advance the common good,\u201d particularly as our \u201ccultural capital\u201d declines \u2014 but in the end the question of capitalism\u2019s social and political consequences is \u201can empirical one.\u201d<\/p>\n
