\n A black woman who was refused service at a Baltimore restaurant due to her 9-year-old son\u2019s outfit is suing for at least $150,000 in damages, alleging they were denied solely due to their race.<\/p>\n

A clip posted to Twitter<\/a> last month shows Marcia Grant, of Baltimore, being told by a white manager at Ouzo Bay on June 21 that the restaurant couldn\u2019t accommodate her and her son Dallas due to the boy\u2019s athletic shorts, which violated its dress code.<\/p>\n

But the footage also showed a nearby white child wearing an \u201coutfit almost identical\u201d to Grant\u2019s son who was allowed to eat at the Greek seafood spot, according to the woman\u2019s discrimination lawsuit and attorney Donte Mills.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe effects of this will last for the rest of his life,\u201d Mills told The Post Thursday of the potential impact on Grant\u2019s son. \u201cImagine now, a 9-year-old child has been told he wasn\u2019t good enough because of the color of his skin. In the future, when he walks into rooms, will he feel inadequate?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hours after the visit, Atlas Restaurant Group said it was \u201csickened\u201d by the incident and put the manager on indefinite leave. He and a second manager were later fired, the Baltimore Sun reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something that he\u2019s going to have to live with for the rest of his life,\u201d Grant told the news<\/a>paper last month of the incident\u2019s potential impact on her son. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t heal like a wound would.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in a statement issued ahead of Grant\u2019s lawsuit filed July 2, the Atlas Restaurant Group said its dress code was \u201capp<\/a>lied equally\u201d to her son and the white child while calling on Grant to release the full 10-minute video she took during her visit.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s suit, meanwhile, claims there was \u201cno apparent distinction\u201d between her son\u2019s outfit and that of the white child who was permitted to eat at the restaurant, WJZ-TV reports.<\/p>\n

An attorney for Atlas, Scott Marder, claims all customers must adhere to its dress code \u201cregardless of their race\u201d and has accused Grant of going on an \u201corchestrated media tour\u201d \u2014 an apparent reference to her appearance on \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d the Baltimore Sun reports.<\/p>\n

Anchor Michael Strahan invited Grant\u2019s son to dinner during the appearance, the newspaper reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can only imagine it was based on the fact that Dallas was black,\u201d Grant told the former NFL star of why she thought her son was denied.<\/p>\n

Since the incident, Atlas Restaurant Group has retrained staff and is forming a corporate social responsibility board, a spokesman told the Sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to reinforce our commitment to equity, fairness and inclusion for everyone,\u201d spokesman Joe Sweeney said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Dallas, meanwhile, has been left shaken by the incident, Mills said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants people not to be racist,\u201d the attorney said of his discussions with the boy. \u201cBecause when you\u2019re racist, you can hurt people\u2019s feelings. It\u2019s harmful, it\u2019s hurtful, and that\u2019s the effect he took from it. You feel like you\u2019re not enough \u2014 and to make a 9-year-old feel that way, that\u2019s unimaginable.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
