“#Lucinda Franks, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, dead at 74<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lucinda Franks \u2014 who wrote a loving memoir of her 42-year marriage to late Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau \u2014 died Wednesday night after a long battle with cancer, her family said.<\/p>\n

She was 74.<\/p>\n

The Boston-born journalist got her start as a coffee girl at the London office of United Press International, digging up stories in her own time and travel<\/a>ing to Northern Ireland during the Troubles.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt 22, she found herself dodging bullets and sending back stories to UPI headquarters, which later won several awards,\u201d her bio notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After being transferred to UPI\u2019s New York bureau, she infiltrated the revolutionary terrorist group the Weathermen for a five-part series<\/a> that made her the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.<\/p>\n

It was also in New York where she met Morgenthau, who would become New York City\u2019s longest-serving district attorney with 35 years on the job.<\/p>\n

Morgenthau once recalled to the Poughkeepsie Journal<\/a> how his wife-to-be stuck out when questioning him about then-President Richard Nixon\u2019s fundraising activities tied to the Watergate scandal.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made me spell out all these names, and I said, this is the dumbest reporter, or the smartest,\u201d Morgenthau said. \u201cAfter I read the story, I said she was the smartest.\u201d<\/p>\n

They married in 1977 and were together until Morgenthau\u2019s death in July 2019, just 10 days before his 100th birthday.<\/p>\n

Franks penned a 2015 memoir about their decades together called, \u201cTimeless: Love, Morgenthau and Me.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cShe cared for Bob and loved him, and always made sure he was OK,\u201d longtime friend Lila Meade told the Poughkeepsie Journal.<\/p>\n
