Of all the technological advances in recent years, they\u2019re up there with the best.\u00a0So when the Sonos Roam was announced I was \u2014 as the kids say \u2014 #Down2Clown.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what? It\u2019s good. Really good. This includes a gamut of hardware, such as the Sonos Move (a less portable speaker than the Roam), the Sonos Arc (a soundbar), the Sonos One (a compact powered speaker), and many, many more.<\/p>\n<p>The idea underpinning Sonos\u2019 gear is it provides an easy way to produce seamless sound across your entire house. Behind me, floating in space, is the Sonos One (on the left) and the Sonos Move (on the right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_is_Sonos_equipment_any_good\"><\/span>And is Sonos equipment any good?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you asked me five years ago I would\u2019ve said \u201cno, not really.\u201d Then probably something like \u201cwho are you and why are you asking and can you get out of my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But things have changed.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d put this down to three main factors: Sonos\u00a0upping its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, the improving quality of basic networking equipment, and better audio standards like AirPlay 2 and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_5\">Bluetooth 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Where once I found Sonos equipment glitchy and overpriced, my current view is the company makes solid music hardware that works pretty damn well.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_tell_us_about_the_Sonos_Roam\"><\/span>So tell us about the Sonos Roam<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019d be my pleasure. It\u2019s around\u00a017cm tall and weighs about 430g \u2014 about the same as a standard tin of tomatoes. In other words, it\u2019s heavy enough to feel premium, but light enough to chuck in your bag and not notice it.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IP_Code\">It\u2019s also IP67 rated<\/a>, which means it has water and dust resistance, and can be immersed in up to one meter of clean water for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Battery-wise, Sonos says it can last for up to 10 hours on a single charge, something I found broadly accurate, but slightly dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointing. A portable speaker of this size\u00a0<em>should<\/em> last a few hours longer.<\/p>\n<p>In regards to charging, the Sonos Roam does it via USB-C (woo!) or a Qi-enabled wireless chargers. The build-quality of the Sonos Roam is solid. It has the look and feel of a premium bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, rather than the rough-and-ready workhorse you get from many other portable speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The Sonos Roam feels sturdy enough to survive being bashed in your backpack, but I do question how good its\u00a0<em>fancy<\/em> aesthetic will look after it has been scuffed up for several months.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, the speaker would\u2019ve come with a carry case of some variety. The portable speaker is teensy-tiny, but delivers\u00a0a bigger and more detailed sound than I anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you\u2019re not going to get audiophile-quality noise out of something this size, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s bad.<\/p>\n<p>In my testing, I found the bass has a pleasant, meaty thump. But the Sonos Roam is really about the mids. This makes sense, as it sounds as thought it\u2019s been tuned as a\u00a0party speaker, putting vocal ranges and bass to the fore.<\/p>\n<p>This is further reinforced when you consider the slightly\u00a0dulled trebles the Sonos Roam has a habit of producing. This isn\u2019t bad per se \u2014 there\u2019s little worse than listening to music outside and cymbals cutting through everything \u2014 but it does show the limitations of the device.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, the Sonos Roam is lacking a certain level of detail and clarity, but not enough that it ever overshadows your enjoyment of the music.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of other criticism, I\u2019d like a bit more oomph from the speaker, but more on that later.<\/p>\n<p>So I was going to sum it up? When the Sonos Roam\u2019s mic is turned on, the device analyzes the space it\u2019s in and changes the EQ depending on the environment. What this means is you don\u2019t notice the sound of the speaker changing when you move about.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds pointless, but is fantastic in practice. In other words, the app was a bit shit. Fortunately, that experience is no longer so harrowing.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, there\u2019s the occasional blip \u2014 I had problems pairing the Sonos Roam with my phone at first\u00a0\u2014 but I\u2019d say full setup only took a couple of minutes and since then it\u2019s been smooth sailing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>ly, I don\u2019t tend to use the Sonos app to actually play music, but I sucked this up (I\u2019m a hero) and found it worked well. I\u2019ve already mentioned the desire for more nuanced sound, as well as a bit more\u00a0<em>punch.\u00a0<\/em>Honestly, I think this could\u2019ve been solved if Sonos made the Roam bigger.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t need to increase its size much, but a few extra centimeters here and there could\u2019ve delivered more power, larger speakers, and improved the battery life. Earlier, I shared a picture of the Sonos Roam on its side. You can see the feet that enable this on the top left of the picture above.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, this is cool. I enjoy being able to lay the Sonos Roam down like this. The issue is that the speakers are only on one side of the device, meaning sound is pumped out from one direction.<\/p>\n<p>In my mind, portable speakers in this mold operate better when they have a full 360-degree sound and can be planted in the middle of groups. I would\u2019ve liked to see that from Sonos.<\/p>\n<p>Then we have the price.<\/p>\n<p>While $170 is broadly reasonable, it puts the Sonos Roam on the upper end of the portable speaker market. On balance, I think this is reasonable considering what you get, but it\u2019s definitely not a bargain.<\/p>\n<p>All of this leads us onto our next point\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competitors\"><\/span>Competitors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I mentioned at the start of this review that I\u2019m a huge fan of portable speakers. Now, in the past few years my favorite has been the UE BOOM 3.\u00a0This is an interesting point to raise because the two speakers complement each other in opposite ways.<\/p>\n<p>Let me elucidate.<\/p>\n<p>The Boom 3 is beefier than the Roam, which gives it a more powerful bass response, as well as a meatier, punchier sound. It\u2019s also more rugged,\u00a0delivers a true 360-degree sound, and you can currently pick it up for around $120 \u2014 a fair chunk cheaper than the Roam.<\/p>\n<p>But the Sonos Roam is strong in a lot of the areas where the BOOM 3 struggles.<\/p>\n<p>It looks more elegant, supports a wider range of playing methods, and can deliver more consistent sound with Trueplay. Products in this category will always be hamstrung by size constraints, meaning trade-offs are necessary.<\/p>\n<p>What this means is you need to make a decision about what\u00a0it is\u00a0<em>you<\/em> want from a portable speaker.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re going to be using it mainly in rough-and-tumble outdoor environments, then the BOOM 3 or MEGABOOM is excellent. Well, it\u2019s easy to get more Sonos gear involved and build out a collection.<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you already have a Sonos system, there\u2019s literally no reason why you\u00a0<em>wouldn\u2019t<\/em> buy a Roam if you were looking for a portable speaker.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a win-win for the company.<\/p>\n<p>The Roam either acts as an enticing lure to get people into its ecosystem, or a must have add-on for existing users. Clever. Very clever.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Look, the Sonos Roam isn\u2019t a perfect portable speaker, but it is a very good one.<\/p>\n<p>As discussed, the company had to make trade-offs in its construction, but the majority of them make sense. The only really criticism I have is the size. I think if the Sonos Roam was\u00a0<em>slightly<\/em> bigger, this could\u2019ve solved some of the issues I have with battery life and sound.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all this, I\u2019m most impressed by how clever a move this is from the company \u2014 and I\u2019m intrigued to see if it drives more people into the arms of Sonos\u2019 ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the Sonos Roam is a terrific little speaker that does a lot of things very well.
