Emma Stone isn\u2019t the type of gal to announce her engagement with a flashy emerald-cut rock, \u00e0 la J.Lo. But it still came as a surprise when the actress posed for a low-key engagement announcement \u2014 on (now husband) Dave McCary\u2019s Instagram \u2014 brandishing a ring not with a diamond in the center but a lustrous white . . . pearl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a very cool and unique look,\u201d says Scott Udell, vice president of London Jewelers, referring to Stone\u2019s ring, which was created by Tokyo-based jeweler Kataoka. The $4,780 piece does include some small diamonds, forming the brand\u2019s signature snowflake motif<\/a> around the pearl.\u00a0But its milky-white center orb is the star.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat trend is in, but I don\u2019t think the look is for everybody,\u201d says Udell, adding that pearls can be a perilously delicate option for a ring that most women wear every day. (You\u2019ll probably want to take off a piece with a pearl when swimming, working out or sleeping.) But he agrees that Stone\u2019s idiosyncratic choice aligns with trends he\u2019s seen over the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just more subtle,\u201d he says of the kinds of sparklers nabbing the spotlight since COVID-19 struck. \u201cThere\u2019s maybe just a little bit more emotion or content that\u2019s incorporated in [choosing] your engagement ring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forget a diamond as big as the Ritz. Now, brides-to-be are looking for a ring that\u2019s sweet, distinct and deeply personal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m seeing more and more people looking for something unique and special, or wanting to design their own ring,\u201d says Lucrezia Buccellati, co-creative director of Buccellati, who in 2014 designed the 100-year-old jeweler\u2019s first line of engagement rings<\/a>. While her collection does feature diamonds, she also works with clients who want to incorporate, say, a sapp<\/a>hire or ruby as the centerpiece.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other day, some customers came in, and [they] wanted a ring with a stone that comes from their country,\u201d she says, adding that she\u2019s happy to oblige. \u201cAn engagement ring is an emotional piece that lasts forever and that will be passed down and become an heirloom,\u201d she explains. \u201cThere\u2019s a sentimental factor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Look no further than Ariana Grande, whose fianc\u00e9 Dalton Gomez popped the question with<\/a> an oval diamond set at an angle next to a radiant pearl. Fans immedia<\/a>tely noted that the pearl looked similar to the one included on a ring Grande\u2019s \u201cnonna\u201d made for her out of a vintage tie pin worn by the singer\u2019s grandfather \u2014 amplifying the emotional depth of the object.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful, unique ring,\u201d says Udell, adding that the oval-shaped diamond really makes the look.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like a longer stone and the way it looks on the finger,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt looks \u2018spreadier\u2019 and bigger and just lays really nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jasmine Tookes has also been sporting an oval-shaped diamond. The Victoria\u2019s Secret model took to Instagram in October to show off her $250,000 custom Ritani engagement ring<\/a>, featuring a delicate gold band and the 7-carat jewel with a hidden halo and diamond-enhanced prongs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been a few celebrities in the past five years that have definitely put ovals on the map,\u201d Udell says. \u201cAnd it looks like they\u2019re here to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another trend Udell has noticed: bezel settings, like Lily Collins\u2019 engagement ring. The one-of-a-kind piece \u2014 designed by Collins\u2019 fianc\u00e9, director Charlie McDowell, with jeweler Irene Neuwirth \u2014 features a rose-cut diamond surrounded by a gold band that lets you see through the diamond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The flat rose cut isn\u2019t as sparkly \u2014 or popular \u2014 as a brilliant or cushion cut, but the vintage design has a nostalgic vibe that\u2019s particularly appealing right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people are going back to antique vintage engagement rings,\u201d says Buccellati. \u201cThat antique look has a lot of romance to it.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
