“#Blinken vows US ‘will respond’ to Russian acts of aggression<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The United States has and \u201cwill respond\u201d to Russian acts of aggression, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged Thursday.<\/p>\n

Speaking to BBC Radio 4 in an interview during his brief trip<\/a> to the United Kingdom, the highest ranking American diplomat made the vow after being asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ability to carry out the Kremlin\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat President Biden has said very clearly and repeatedly is if Russia acts recklessly or aggressively, as it did with the SolarWinds cyber intrusion, as it did with interference in our elections, as it did with what it\u2019s done to Mr. Navalny, then we will respond,\u201d Blinken said. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut at the same time, we would prefer a more stable and predictable relationship, and if Russia chooses that path, there are areas where we can cooperate in our mutual interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was then asked about the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany, which Biden opposes. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe think the pipeline is a bad idea. It advances Russia\u2019s interests and undermines Europe\u2019s interests and our own. It actually goes against the very principles that the EU has set out in terms of energy security and not being too dependent on any one country, notably, in this case, Russia. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, of course, it\u2019s detrimental to Ukraine, to Poland, and other key European countries. So he\u2019s been clear about that, we\u2019ve been clear about that, and that hasn\u2019t changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blinken\u2019s comments come as Moscow continues to flex its military muscle in Ukraine and in the Black Sea \u2014 as well as its warning to the US to back off, which caused President Biden to turn two US warships around that were headed to the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

Biden declared a national emergency last month,\u00a0slapp<\/a>ing sanctions\u00a0on more than three dozen people in Russia and expelling 10 diplomats.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he\u00a0scrapped plans\u00a0to send two US warships to the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

Russian President\u00a0Vladimir Putin\u00a0subsequently closed off\u00a0the Kerch Strait to foreign warships until next fall.<\/p>\n

Since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, Russia has supported pro-Russian insurgents in neighboring republics \u2014 including shoring up allied breakaway states in Georgia and Moldova.<\/p>\n

Putin presided over the annexation of Crimea in 2014 without Ukraine\u2019s consent in a rare present-day boundary change by force.<\/p>\n

Russian troop deployments are often murky, but Putin\u2019s government is believed to have deployed troops to Crimea to facilitate the 2014 annexation and to have secretly supported a pair of breakaway provinces in eastern Ukraine\u2019s Donbas region.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin has continued to increase its military presence in the region, specifically with its naval ships in the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

In addition to the heightened aggression-at-sea, top Pentagon officials briefed lawmakers last month on suspected \u201cdirected-energy\u201d attacks against US troops, potentially by Russia.<\/p>\n

Directed-energy weapons use lasers, microwaves and particle beams to hit and destroy their target.<\/p>\n

Blinken was also asked during the interview about the reshaping of global perceptions about China as it becomes a dominant super power, to which he responded that the US was not \u201ctrying to hold it back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in favor of upholding certain basic ideas, and in particular, this so-called rules-based international system that we and the United Kingdom, among others, have heavily invested in for generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever anyone tries to undermine that system by not playing by the rules, by not making good on commitments it\u2019s made, then we will stand up and say no, we don\u2019t accept that.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments are similar to remarks he made to CBS\u2019 \u201c60 Minutes\u201d<\/a> Sunday, in which he acknowledged the \u201creal complexities to the [US-China] relationship, whether it\u2019s the adversarial piece, whether it\u2019s the competitive piece, whether it\u2019s the cooperative piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

The secretary of state was also asked about China\u2019s intentions to become a hegemonic power, to which Blinken responded by noting the US\u2019 goals are \u201cnot to contain\u201d the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s rise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be very clear about something, and this is important. Our purpose is not to contain China, to hold it back, to keep it down,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt is to uphold this rules-based order that China is posing a challenge to. Anyone who poses a challenge to that order, we\u2019re going to stand up and defend it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
