Google is so sick of you relying on passwords that the company hopes to one day ditch the authentication method<\/a> altogether. But in the meantime, the search giant is introducing a simpler way of improving security online: activating two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Google accounts by default.<\/p>\n

The Big G currently\u00a0offers 2FA \u2014 also known as two-step verification (2SV) \u2014 as an optional setting, but will soon turn it on automatically.<\/p>\n

Mark Risher, Google\u2019s director of product management, identity, and user security, announced the plan in a Thursday blog post:<\/p>\n

Today we ask people who have enrolled in\u00a0<\/span>two-step verification (2SV)<\/a>\u00a0to confirm it\u2019s really them with a simple tap via a Google prompt on their phone whenever they sign in.\u00a0<\/span>Soon we\u2019ll start automatically enrolling users in 2SV if their accounts are app<\/a>ropriately configured.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

An \u201cappropriately configured\u201d account will already include recovery information, such as a secondary email or a phone number.\u00a0You can check your setup on Google\u2019s Security Checkup<\/a>\u00a0page<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also have the choice to opt-out of 2FA, but that\u2019s normally an unwise move. Studies by Microsoft<\/a> found that your account is more than 99.9% less likely to be compromised if you use multi-factor authentication.<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean that\u00a02FA is perfect<\/a>, but it\u2019s a lot safer than following Kanye West\u2019s lead<\/a> and securing your account with just the password 000000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
